In an empty area behind the classroom the client required a design to uplift and beautify the space. Key considerations were a functional interactive playground for the younger children with an emphasis on native planting. A mature Pohutukawa tree was to be preserved and the design to work around this important tree. The area had a lack of purpose and no defined use with little connection between the classroom and courts. Another priority for St Ignatius was beautification, it was important to improve the visual appeal of this area. The main intent was to create a multiple purpose space, its focus is a purposeful path along with secret passages creating varied and alternative ways for getting from one place to another. Children are creative in the way they move, they do not take a linear path when they move through a space, so including elements that encouraged, jumping, spinning, hopping was important. This is seen in the fixed platforms, moving swinging bridge, sand pit, paving design and stepping logs representing an ancient forest. The planting was considered early in the design process, a native planting grove was created in a grid formation. The wooden bridge allows native species to be protected and thrive underneath, untouched by the path and children passing over the space.

At our yard we have built a showroom where our designers can guide you in what materials would best fit your project, e.g. paving, decking, lighting etc. You can also provide an existing plan to quote your project from and then we will guide you through the landscaping works from start to finish. Luijten Landscaping has a nursery that enables us to provide a large selection of the highest quality plants. If the nursery cannot provide the variety or quantity of plants for your project we will happily source them from one of our nationwide suppliers.
