Originally constructed approximately 100 years ago, this former industrial building is one of only a few brick structures remaining in Christchurch. The client saw the potential of the building and with input from EDC, made the decision to retain and work with the original structure.
Working with buildings of this vintage is always challenging. Invariably there is no record of the original construction and the existing structure is not necessarily square and true to begin with - set backs are a natural expectation.
Retaining and working with old building material, and bringing them up to modern standards is complicated. To achieve this EDC designed a new steel framework within the building that not only provided structural strengthening (well over 67%NBS) but further enhanced and complimented the industrial look the client was endeared to.
By establishing a strong and trusted relationship with the client and contractor, EDC were able to keep construction progressing through all setbacks.
