The Milldam

Set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Port Sorell Estuary, this striking three-level family home is carefully oriented to maximise its exceptional location and views. Conceived and built by architect Jaron Coward of Starbox Architecture, the home exemplifies “rugged luxury”. Rylock Windows & Doors was central to achieving this aesthetic, and its bespoke designs elevated both the project’s functionality and visual appeal.
Built to Withstand the Elements
Given the home’s location, durability and environmental resilience were paramount. Rylock products were thoughtfully specified to meet the site’s N3 wind rating and Bushfire Attack Level (BAL 29) requirements, ensuring the home is both beautiful and built to last.
Maximising Views, Enhancing Design
Inside, the double-height stairway void connects the entry to the upper levels, crowned by an impressive 11m skylight that draws natural light into the heart of the home.
The second floor is a standout feature of the home, where you’ll find an open-plan kitchen, dining, and living areas, all designed to take in the northern light and breathtaking views. Here, Rylock’s Fixed Lite Window, at a dominant 5.8m in length, creates a dramatic sense of openness in the dining area that floods the interior with natural light.
In the living area, a 5.6m wide 3 panel Stacker Door seamlessly connects the indoors with the outdoors, enhancing the home’s flow and functionality. The kitchen mirrors this approach, with an additional 3 panel Stacker Door inviting the lush surroundings inside.
Throughout the home, Rylock’s thoughtfully designed products were used to address both functional needs and aesthetic desires.
- Main Bedroom: Given the main bedroom was limited in size, yet there was an objective to create a sense of tranquillity that draws the natural environment into the private quarters, a floor-to-ceiling Projecting Sash Window was coupled to a Fixed Lite Window to surround the occupants in the natural environment. The room’s Sliding Door provides access to the balcony which overlooks the Port Sorell Estuary, where all products deliver a streamlined façade to meet the architectural vision.
- Bathrooms and Laundry: Practicality meets elegance with Awning Windows featuring flooded gum reveals, adding a touch of texture to these often-overlooked spaces.
- Void and Stairwell: The Fixed Lite Window in the stairwell enhances the home’s biophilic design by drawing natural light into the double-height void and perfectly complementing the overhead skylight. It also serves as a unique splashback for the kitchen, seamlessly connecting and enhancing the flow between spaces.
Every window and door serves not only as a functional element but also as a design statement, contributing to a home that celebrates its unique surroundings and offers a luxurious, inviting living experience. The orientation allows for abundant natural light to flood the living spaces while floor-to-ceiling glass creates a seamless connection to the outdoors.
From expansive Fixed Lite Windows framing awe-inspiring views to thoughtfully positioned Sliding and Stacker Doors, Rylock products elevate this home into a true architectural masterpiece.
