University of Auckland (B201) Social Sciences building situated on Symonds Street achieves a 6 Green Star NZGBC design rating.  The existing concrete clad building was reclad with a low-carbon high performance Thermosash PW1000 Unitised Curtainwall system, providing an insulated and airtight envelope which contributes to the low energy use of the building over its lifespan.

Jaxmax designed the UOA B201 building to reflect and acknowledge the historic trading Pā of Waipapa and the waka that were used for trading from the shore of Te Tōangaroa (Auckland's CBD eastern waterfront area).

“To reduce the embodied carbon of the new façade we considered design options with minimal amounts of low carbon materials. The design of the curtain wall system utilised aluminium extrusions sourced in Aotearoa made from 85% recycled content and 60% less carbon emissions than international aluminium. Due to the inherent strength of these lightweight extrusions, we could further reduce the quantity of material required.” Jasmax Principal and design lead, Chris Scott. Our Expertise
Thermosash’s abilities have grown since its 1973 start-up when Laurie Hayes and his colleagues manufactured commercial windows out of a small production facility. It quickly became apparent that the products and skills of the workforce were creating a performing quality, flexible product that the market sought.

Over time, our teams of dedicated and committed people have grown, this has been possible through constant reassessment of internal and external processes and manufacturing methods from around the world. We’ve also provided ongoing reinvestment in the training of our people to ensure lean process, IT Systems, material handling machinery and transport logistics equipment, as well as design office and factory production process improvements. We are able to offer a world class company with manufacturing facilities in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.
