University of Auckland B201

University of Auckland (B201) Social Sciences building situated on Symonds Street has become the champion of sustainability and innovation in New Zealand as well as a world-leading example abroad – achieving a 6 Green Star NZGBC Design rating, and winning the Excellence in Heritage and Adaptive Reuses Property Award, Excellence in Education Property Award and an overall Excellence in all categories it was entered for.
This adaptive reuse success story transformed an existing 50-year-old concrete clad building by replacing the full façade and building services. The structure was reclad with a low-carbon high performance Thermosash PW1000 Unitised Curtainwall system, providing an insulated and airtight envelope which contributes to the low energy use of the building over its lifespan.
“To reduce the embodied carbon of the new façade we considered design options with minimal amounts of low carbon materials. The design of the curtain wall system utilised aluminium extrusions sourced in Aotearoa made from 85% recycled content and 60% less carbon emissions than international aluminium. Due to the inherent strength of these lightweight extrusions, we could further reduce the quantity of material required.” Jasmax Principal and design lead, Chris Scott.
