When renovating a grand home in Sydney’s eastern suburbs built in the early 1840s, interior designer Kate Nixon was briefed to “support the original design and to create a European sensibility and authenticity”. Working with architects LiveinDesign and builders JMichael Constructions, Kate created a timeless interior.

The sophisticated palette of linen, leather, stone, brass, iron, and cane complements the existing art and collected objects to create an inviting space for family life. “It’s designed to deliver the elusive juxtaposition of classic and contemporary, the best of old and new for luxurious everyday living,” says Kate.

Tongue & Groove solid engineered European oak flooring in the Oslo colourway and a Chevron parquetry pattern was the immediate choice for the flooring from the early concept stages, referencing the elegant European sensibility that the client so desired.

The timber flooring is used throughout the ground and first floor entry, living, dining, kitchen, bedrooms and hallways. In the first floor master ensuite, the timber flooring is continued from the adjoining master bedroom and walk-in wardrobe for a seamless connection and inimitable warmth.

The beautiful junctions between the timber flooring and the statement Calacatta Oro marble slabs in the shower and freestanding bath plinth create subtle  yet striking threshold transitions.

“Tongue & Groove flooring provided the perfect combination of quality, tone, and texture that was on brief and in budget,” says Kate. “It’s the perfect complement to the elegant palette.”

“The flooring provided an elegant canvas for the rest of the interior. Because we worked on a palette of layering different tones and textures, it helped contribute to a calm, soft space with the durability and longevity we were after. The interior features veneer, cabinetry, stone and brass accents throughout. The Tongue & Groove flooring gave a lovely, soft coloured backdrop for the rest of the neutral tones to work together.”
