Making an entrance in design with thermally-enhanced aluminium doors

From aluminium doors to timber, barn doors to shutters, the first impression is crucial, and sets the tone for the whole home. A well-designed door attracts attention and creates a sense of anticipation and excitement, drawing people in and encouraging them to explore further.

Alyssa Barr, an Architectural Designer based in the small rural town of Hāwera, New Zealand, worked with Parkwood Doors to bring one of her recent residential projects to life, and to give the access points to the home a welcoming feel.

“For the Taranaki project, I selected the Parkwood Doors’ HV3, as its contemporary look and horizontal lines complemented the home’s other surfaces,” says Alyssa. “Their aluminium styles are strong and hard-wearing, so they can withstand all the weather conditions that Taranaki [a coastal region] is known for.”

Alyssa chose Parkwood Doors’ innovative Thermtek Aluminium doors for the Taranaki project due to their thermally-enhanced properties that help reduce condensation and work with the new H1 Building Code regulations.

New Zealand’s H1 Building Code clause sets physical conditions for energy performance within New Zealand buildings. This clause requires enclosed spaces where temperature or humidity are modified to provide adequate thermal resistance and to limit uncontrollable airflow in certain buildings.

To match the Taranaki project’s sophisticated, modern and minimalistic colours, the home’s external door, the HV3, was custom powdercoated. This allowed Alyssa to match it with the home’s roof and aluminium windows.

Parkwood’s Thermtek is their patent-protected, thermally-enhanced aluminium technology that keeps the cold outside and warmth inside, or vice versa depending on the season. Behind the exterior layer, you’ll find premium thermal insulation and innovative connectors that allow tiny expansions and contractions with temperature, keeping the door straight and stable. Thermtek doors are less likely to accumulate condensation and create a superior noise barrier than other aluminium doors.

Sliding barn doors are the ideal space-saving solution compared to traditional doors, which typically require up to three metres of clear space. You can customise your barn door to match the interior styling, whether creating a rustic wood look or a modern painted surface with contrasting hardware. Finishing the entry with a selection of potted plants, strategic lighting and storage hooks creates a functional and welcoming entrance.
