How to choose the perfect floor rug for your home

The first step in choosing the right rug for your space is deciding on its shape. This will largely be influenced by the size of the room, but it can also depend on the room's function. Rugs come in a variety of shapes, with the most common being one of the following:

1. Rectangle: The most versatile shape, ideal for larger spaces like living rooms or dining areas.
2. Round: Perfect for creating a softer, more intimate feel, commonly used in dining rooms or smaller seating areas.
3. Oval: A refined variation of the rectangle, oval rugs add elegance and work well in spaces with rounded furniture or softer lines.
4. Runner: Long and narrow, runners are great for hallways or placing beside beds, adding warmth and style to narrow spaces.
5. Square: Symmetrical and balanced, square rugs are perfect for smaller rooms or creating a uniform look in a space.
6. Irregular: Unique and artistic, irregular-shaped rugs add a modern, creative touch to any room, making them ideal for a statement piece.

When selecting a shape, it's important to consider the furniture that will sit on top of the rug. The rug and furniture should complement each other, not compete for attention. A bit of contrast can add visual interest, but the key is balance. For example, a round rug can soften the lines of a rectangular room or break up the symmetry of square furniture, while a rectangular rug can help define a seating area in an open-plan space.

Once you've decided on a shape, it's time to narrow down the colour of the rug you're looking for. This decision can come in a variety of ways depending on your personal preference. Some homeowners choose to pick from the rug styles first before making any other design choices for the room. This allows them full freedom in their choice, which some prefer. They can simply select the one that moves them the most be it something neutral or a pop of colour.

Others choose to have the rest of the room put together and then find a rug that complements the design. This narrows down the search much more, which can be very helpful for those who are more indecisive. Either way, a colour palette is a good place to start when looking at all of your options to keep things moving in the right direction.

After a colour is chosen, it's time to decide if you'd like a neutral tones rug or a patterned rug:

Neutral-tone rugs

A neutral-tone rug adds warmth, versatility, and a calming atmosphere to a room. Its subtle colours, like beige, grey, or taupe, create a timeless foundation that complements various décor styles without overwhelming the space. Ideal for balancing bold furniture or patterns, it enhances the room’s overall harmony while allowing other elements to stand out. Neutral rugs are perfect for creating a serene, inviting environment that works seamlessly with any design.

Pattern rugs

Pattern rugs can add visual interest and become a striking focal point in a room, making them an excellent choice for spaces that lack bold features or decorative elements. They’re particularly effective in spaces that lack bold architectural features or other standout decor elements, as they can introduce texture, colour, and movement to an otherwise simple or understated room. Additionally, patterned rugs can help define different areas in open-plan spaces, adding structure and warmth while giving the room a more cohesive, layered feel.

Ultimately, the choice between a neutral-tone or patterned rug is yours to make, depending on the look and feel you want to achieve in your space.

The biggest mistake homeowners make when choosing a new area rug is getting the wrong size. A rug that’s too small or too large can disrupt the room’s proportions, making the space feel unbalanced or incomplete. However, when you use the right sized rug the room will come together, creating a sense of cohesion and making the space feel more thoughtfully designed. Ideally, your rug should fill the space with a border around the edges, allowing for a sense of flow and harmony. As a general rule, it's always better to go for a slightly larger rug than one that’s too small.

Rugs do more than add colour and pattern to a room, they also elevate the cosiness and comfort level with their soft textures. When choosing the right rug, it’s important to consider the type of feel you want underfoot, as this will help you narrow down your options and ensure maximum comfort. A low-pile rug is perfect for a place where there is a lot of traffic and will need to be cleaned regularly. Higher-pile rugs, on the other hand, is perfect for spaces where comfort is key, such as play areas for children or living rooms where you’ll be lounging. The look of the rug is obviously important but it's crucial to keep the functionality of the rug in mind as well to ensure that your purchase matches your style and meets your practical needs.

Most rugs are being placed on hard floors in a home, which is why the rug pad is also an important consideration to make. A rug pad is a cushioned layer placed underneath a rug, typically made of materials like rubber, felt, or a combination of both. A good pad not only adds extra cushioning for comfort but also helps keep the rug securely in place, preventing it from slipping or bunching up. Moreover, a rug pad can significantly enhance the durability and performance of your rug, providing added support and prolonging its lifespan.
