What makes a beach holiday memorable is often the time spent outside. Sitting in the sun, moving into shade and lingering after dusk. As summer approaches in New Zealand, that relaxing rhythm can be a starting point for your deck, courtyard or garden at home.
At home, an outdoor area might host a quick morning coffee, an afternoon with a book or a conversation that continues after dinner. It needs to feel comfortable at different times of day, not just look good in the midday sun. These five finds take their cue from that part of coastal living.
TheETHIMO LODGE Daybed from Wolf & South Outdoor offers somewhere to slow down. Broad and generously cushioned, it gives an outdoor space a comfortable place to stretch out and let an afternoon pass without much of a plan.
Its light, tubular aluminium frame balances the seat's softness, giving it a clear presence without feeling bulky. A daybed also suggests a different use for the outdoors. It makes room for rest, rather than treating every deck or terrace as a place that needs to be set up for entertaining.
Not every moment outside is spent reclining. Cult Design’sSia Outdoor Chair, with its sculptural seat and curved backrest, suits a terrace or open-air dining area where people can pull up a chair and stay for a while.
Its distinctive shape brings character to the setting without relying on a bright colour or a coastal motif to do the work. It is easy to imagine it around a table for a long lunch, or as an extra seat when a quiet afternoon becomes a more sociable one.
For a more shared setting, theElio Sofa from Dawson & Co. brings a softly rounded form and woven texture to outdoor seating. Natural teak frames its handwoven seat, giving the piece warmth and detail that can be appreciated up close.
Where the daybed offers space to stretch out, the sofa invites people to sit together. The two need not appear in the same garden to make the same point: outdoor furniture can be as welcoming and considered as the pieces inside a home, while still feeling relaxed enough for everyday use.
The furniture is only part of the experience. Comfort also depends on what happens when the sun moves or the weather changes. Louvretec New Zealand’s 220/35 Slimline Roof can be specified as an opening or retractable roof, allowing an outdoor area to shift between sunshine and shelter.
That flexibility changes how a deck or courtyard can be used over the course of a day. Instead of retreating indoors when the sun becomes too strong, there is the option to adjust the space around it.
When daylight fades, Social Light’s Aludra 95 Garden Light brings light and shadow to a garden or terrace. Its cylindrical form has a sculptural presence during the day, while the patterns it casts give the outdoor setting another character after dark.
It is also designed for seaside conditions, a practical detail for coastal homes and a reminder that outdoor choices have to respond to their surroundings as well as their mood.
None of this requires coastal styling or a view of the sea. The beach feeling is in the way the day unfolds, with comfortable places to settle and fewer reasons to go inside.
