About the build: The restoration of the Christchurch Arts Centre has been in progress over the past 7 years. The project has been overseen by Chris Whitty, who has used a team of specialist Stonemason’s and Carpenter’s to painstakingly strengthen years of natural ageing and more recently repair earthquake damage. The clock tower was built in 1877 and was originally part of the Canterbury College (now known as Canterbury University) which over time has moved to its current site in Ilam, with the last studies on-site culminating in 1978. Architect Benjamin Mountfort was inspired by the architectural style of Gothic revival, which was popular in that period in Christchurch. Because of the heritage of these buildings, Canterbury Clay Bricks were engaged to replicate some of the Colonial shaped bricks. Through a fantastic collaboration between Chris and the team at CCB a replica of the brick was produced and then hand aged on-site, so that old and new blended seamlessly. The Christchurch Art Centre always was and now will continue to be, one of Canterbury’s most historic icons, with the repairs and renovations beautifully demonstrating examples of outstanding craftsmanship and production techniques through the ages.

Canterbury Clay Bricks is a family run business, supplying clay bricks nationally, for commercial and residential builds, since its inception over 50 years ago.  We are the only manufacturer of kiln fired clay bricks in the South Island.

We offer you an impressive collection using rich Canterbury clays, from which we have created a host of enduring finishes and colours that will add style and value to your new home or project.

Canterbury Clay Bricks manufacturing plant is located close to its clay supplies within the surronding hills of Darfield. A number of recycled products are used in the manufacture of the bricks including re-constituted brick and recycled glass. The kilns at the plant run on up to 95% of re-claimed fuels and oil further reducing any impact of manufacturing. We supply nationwide to both residential and commercial projects, new builds and renovations. 

Bricks are a blend of clays and water. The bricks are then formed, dried and kilned to produce a strong and durable end product. They are then hand blended and graded by staff to give a consistent finish.
