Kuiwai House

This home, located in a new suburban development in Rainbow Point, Taupō, was designed for a unique site and a hands-on client—who also happened to be the builder (Klein Builders Ltd). Positioned on one of the last available sections in the area, the site lacks a direct lake view but offers a range of compelling qualities that shaped the architectural response.

The section allowed the building to stretch along its length, opening fully to the north. This orientation maximises exposure to sun throughout the day, creating warm, naturally lit interior spaces. At the same time, this layout shelters the northern outdoor and living areas from the prevailing south-west winds that sweep across Lake Taupō from the mountains—enhancing comfort and usability.

Bordering a public walkway planted with native vegetation, the site enjoys a bush-like outlook that contrasts with the surrounding suburban setting. This relationship between site and design fosters the feeling of living on the edge of the bush while remaining within a residential neighborhood.

The house is clad in a rainscreen of New Zealand-grown Macrocarpa, chosen for its natural durability and the way it will gracefully weather over time, blending the home further into its environment. The plan is simple, open, and accessible—tailored specifically to one of the clients, who is visually impaired. Their brief called for a home that is light-filled, spacious, and easy to navigate.
