About Lake House projects
The lake house projects on this page include The Lakehouse by Fraser Cameron Architects and Lake House, Rotoiti by ECC Architectural, examples of residential work in New Zealand. Waterfront architecture needs to reconcile the outlook with the way rooms are used: a living room facing the lake may need protection from low sun, while bedrooms need privacy from neighbouring properties. A useful way to compare designs and gather ideas is to trace the route from the entrance to the living spaces, noting where views open up and where shelter matters.
Lake House architecture
Assess a stair entry such as Spiral Staircase, Queenstown by Sheet Metalcraft by the space needed for movement between floors, rather than its appearance alone. Allow for carrying furniture and outdoor equipment, and ask the designer to check stair dimensions against the intended use and applicable Building Code requirements. Storage at the arrival level can reduce the need to carry gear through the house.
What information does a lake house designer need?
Set out the expected number of occupants and whether the home will be used year-round or for holidays. Include space for drying wet clothing near an entrance if swimming or boating is part of the brief.
How should windows be planned around a water view?
Ask the designer to assess the orientation and seasonal sun before deciding on window sizes. Compare glazing and shading options together, accounting for winter heat loss as well as summer overheating.
Which site constraints need checking before design begins?
Check council requirements for shoreline setbacks and flood hazards before committing to a building footprint. Establish how wastewater will be managed if the site has no connection to a council network.
