Matic by Design’s transformation of Rose of Sharon Residence in Lavender Bay, reunites a heritage-listed 1930s Arts and Crafts home, previously subdivided into three compact apartments, as a generous contemporary residence for family life. The design honours the building’s architectural provenance through the retention of original concrete columns and the considered repurposing of fireplaces, cabinetry and lead-light doors throughout. These distinctive elements establish a connection between the home’s historic character and its renewed residential purpose.
The removal of a substantial section of floor creates an uplifting entrance, introducing a heightened sense of openness and spatial generosity. A carefully reconfigured layout accommodates five bedrooms with ensuites, while capturing exceptional views of the Harbour Bridge and Opera House without compromising privacy. Within the converted attic, an expansive principal suite incorporates a walk-in wardrobe and ensuite, complemented by sweeping views along the harbour from the large bay balcony.
The addition of a self-contained studio, garage and swimming pool extends the property’s functionality, supporting the varied requirements of contemporary family living. Balancing heritage conservation with thoughtful spatial planning, the completed residence offers an enduring expression of comfort, architectural continuity and understated sophistication.
