We were tasked with creating a refined and contemporary mall-massage experience that elevates an existing client-provided brand through spatial design. Our client wanted to create a space that is focused on forms, not graphics and messaging, where materials are celebrated. Creating an intimate entry experience that acts as a concierge without others being disturbed was key in the design of this project.
The sheer volume of massage rooms had the ability to dominate the design, so we started by planning the space to strongly separate the functions. By succinctly creating a concierge space, a waiting space, a foot treatment space and massage treatment spaces, it allowed us to focus on the needs of each area and design to this.
The client’s existing brand was dominated by conflicting graphic material. We stripped these layers back and focused on the brand-marque, ‘Royal’. We refined the logo and created a supporting palette of materials that was focused on texture and form. EG, French-washed royal blue paint, hand-glazed tiles, coloured grout, reeded glass, half-round piping, brass accents and dried flowers.
To hide columns and create a more intimate entry experience, we created a tall entry archway that curves into the shop and is then framed by a deep brass portal. This is reflected across the shopfront and mirrored as a window option. This repetition is simple and keeps the focus on the materials and forms.
