The street view shows the polycarbonate wall lit up at night and the flat metal wall of the half gable form. All photography by Anthony Turnham.
The folding roof of the metal form has a brick form jutting out the side containing the garage, a scullery (with skylight) and part of the kitchen opening up to a courtyard kitchen.
Facing north, the lounge flows out into a stunning outdoor room with a built-in fireplace/pizza oven and in-situ concrete seating.
The double-height living area looking north towards the outdoor room and pool.
The western courtyard off the lounge area.
The main living area looking west is an adaptable, light-filled space that opens up into an outdoor entertaining area – perfect for parties.
The double-height living space and bookcase leads south past the kitchen to the entry.
Looking through the kitchen to the scullery. Timber, gold and orange add warmth to the grey and white material palette.
Looking west from the kitchen to the staircase.  Timber cabinetry is accented by a mirrored glass splashback that reflects the outdoor fire and the mature trees in the garden.
The long kitchen island is a sculptural feature of the house that's ideal for making longer lengths of pasta, says the architect and homeowner Tim Dagg.
The functional kitchen island can work like a large stand-alone table with a decent overhang, so people can easily perch on the stools for breakfast, coffee or informal drinks
The bar is built into the end of the scullery.
Randomly placed timber boards create a textural feature wall that conceals the entry to the bathroom off the hallway.
The staircase has an exposed metal stringer, with rubber-clad treads and mild steel fronts.
At the top of stairs, the glass balustrade looks down on the living area, north through double-height windows to the trees and swimming pool.
The skylight washes light down over the ash timber wall, adding texture and interest, as well as cross ventilation to keep the house comfortable during summer.
LED lights and a skylight add drama to the ensuite bathroom.
The bathroom uses large-format concrete-look tiles and timber cabinetry and panelling
The minimalist shower has a Japanese feel with.a slatted timber floor.
A pop of orange in the tiling and LED lighting elevate this otherwise all-white bathroom.

About the
Professional

We aim to produce humanist architecture comprised of stimulating and inspirational spaces and places.

We are a design-based practice that believes in providing tailor-made solutions to an individual client's needs. The fundamental objective of the practice is to develop architecture that is appropriate to its specific site, wider context and intended use while being robust, flexible and environmentally-aware.

These variables are used along with the appropriate structural considerations to develop buildings with well-suited form and style, instead of approaching the design from a stylistic standpoint.

The practice was established in 1982 in Christchurch by David Sheppard and Jonty Rout. In its 40 years the practice has carried out a wide range of projects covering many types and in numerous geographic locations. The founding partners brought to the practice extensive design and construction experience gained while working with other offices in both New Zealand and overseas. Tim Dagg joined Sheppard & Rout in 1986 and Jasper van der Lingen in 1993 and they both joined David Sheppard as Directors in 2006.

With David Sheppard now retired and Jonty very sadly passed away the practice is led by Directors Jasper van der Lingen and Tim Dagg and three Associate Directors; Matt Gutsell, Jonathan Kennedy and Steven Orr.
