A sofa, armchair, wall light and bed are among the most familiar objects in a home. These five designs show what can happen when their outlines are reconsidered.
Most furniture follows a recognisable formula. A sofa extends in a straight line, an armchair sits heavily around the body and a bed is usually defined by a rectangular frame. These familiar forms make sense, but they aren’t the only way everyday objects can take shape.
Changing the outline of a piece can also change the way a room feels. A generous curve can soften straight architecture, an unexpected proportion can create a focal point, and the meeting of two different geometries can make a familiar object feel new again.
The effect doesn't depend on bold colour or decoration. Sometimes, the silhouette is enough.
TheBubble Curve Sofa from Roche Bobois begins with the idea of a sofa but leaves behind the straight back and clearly divided cushions normally associated with one. Designed by Sacha Lakic, its rounded volumes draw inspiration from natural and mineral forms, creating a continuous silhouette that appears soft from every direction.
Its shape gives the sofa a sense of movement, even while it remains still. Rather than sitting quietly against a wall, it has the presence to occupy a more open position where its curved back and changing profile can be seen. The room can then begin to organise itself around the sofa rather than treating it as another piece placed along the perimeter.
Poliform’sLe Club Armchair approaches a familiar category from another direction. It reinterprets the voluminous leather armchairs once associated with traditional clubs, retaining their enveloping quality while removing much of their visual weight.
The result is a lighter, more fluid outline. Its back, arms and seat appear to fold into one another, preserving the sense of comfort expected from a club chair without relying on a heavy frame or oversized cushioning. It shows how an established furniture type can be updated by changing its proportions rather than abandoning what made it appealing in the first place.
The bedroom is often arranged around the most familiar rectangle of all: the bed. RJ Living’sLune King Bed in Fossil Eucalyptus softens that outline through oversized rounded edges and generous upholstered proportions.
Rather than ending sharply at each corner, its frame appears to wrap around the mattress. The continuous upholstery gives the bed a cohesive silhouette, while its low height and broad form make it feel grounded. In a room usually defined by straight walls, bedside tables and joinery, those curved edges introduce a useful visual counterpoint.
Together, the five products show that originality doesn’t always require inventing an entirely new object. A sofa can still invite people to gather, an armchair can still offer retreat, and a bed can remain comfortable and practical. The difference lies in how those familiar functions are given form.
Nor does every piece in a room need an unusual shape. One strong silhouette may be enough to interrupt the straight lines, establish a focal point or give the rest of the interior something to respond to.
