Otago local, Jeffrey Dennison has quietly built a reputation for excellence, attention to detail, and unwavering commitment to quality. Now, the Managing Director of Jeffery Dennison Builders (JD Builders), he began his career by completing his carpentry apprenticeship under the guidance of two esteemed builders, one in Palmerston and the other in Mosgiel, Dunedin, before working for a family-run construction business.

“These early experiences honed my skills and instilled the importance of precision and craftsmanship,” reflects Dennison. “Eventually, I decided to take the leap and founded JDBuilders in 2016 in Palmerston, Otago.”

In the early days, the company focused on serving the local communities of Karitane, Waikouiti, Palmerston, Hampden and Moeraki. JDBuilders quickly became known for its ability to fix building defects left behind by less meticulous operators – a skill that did not go unnoticed as his dedication to high standards earned him membership in the prestigious Master Builders Association.

Adding two in-house Quantity Surveyors to our team ensured our ability to provide fast, accurate quoting, which ensured our clients continued to receive quality work and peace of mind.

The company expanded its reach beyond residential projects, venturing into commercial work and securing contracts with significant clients like the New Zealand Ministry of Education. Dennison remarks on the growth of JD Builders, “Adding two in-house Quantity Surveyors to our team ensured our ability to provide fast, accurate quoting, which ensured our clients continued to receive quality work and peace of mind,” he says.

Today, JDBuilders has grown its team and expanded its coverage to include the areas from Dunedin to Oamaru on the East Coast and Ranfurly and Maniototo districts. The company’s dedication to quality, backed by a 10-year Master Builder Guarantee and firm quotes, has made it a trusted name in the industry.

Dennison’s career, from apprentice to master builder, ensures that his company continues to build not just quality structures but also lasting relationships with clients across New Zealand.

Caroline Eve store fit-out project

The brief:

Caroline Eve is one of New Zealand’s largest privately owned women’s retail chains. It is renowned for its exceptional customer service and dedication to helping women find the perfect outfit for any occasion. Founded in 1987, family-run Caroline Eve has grown into a thriving business with 40 stores throughout New Zealand and employing over 170 staff. The decision to relocate and upgrade its Oamaru store reflects Caroline Eve’s commitment to enhancing its brand presence and supporting its 170,000 in-store and online loyal customers.

Despite the challenges of the holiday season, JDBuilders seamlessly coordinated holiday shutdown periods, materials, staff, and subcontractors, ensuring that everything was completed on time and to the highest standard for the store’s all-important grand opening.

"We were honoured to be chosen as the main contractor for the refit of Caroline Eve’s new Oamaru store,” says Dennison. “While the previous store across the street served the brand well for several years, the decision to relocate and upgrade was to enhance their brand presence and support their ongoing expansion across New Zealand," he adds.

The challenges:

"The main challenge wasn’t the fit-out of the retail space itself, but the tight timeline we faced to meet Caroline Eve’s opening date of January 19^th,” reflects Dennison. “To make sure everything was ready on time, we collaborated closely with the architects and our subcontractors, meticulously coordinating efforts to complete all work before the Christmas shutdown period,” he adds.

Dennison remarks that this approach allowed Caroline Eve three weeks to stock their inventory, arrange displays, and install POS equipment, ensuring a smooth and successful grand opening.

The result:

"The Caroline Eve store in Oamaru is designed to offer a welcoming, stylish, and comfortable shopping environment,” says Dennison. “It’s bright and inviting, with well-organised displays that make it easy for customers to browse the latest fashion collections.”

The atmosphere reflects the brand’s commitment to impeccable customer service, creating a friendly and relaxed setting as shoppers are greeted with a mix of classic and contemporary styles, catering to women from their thirties to the more mature.

The dedication to quality, backed by a 10-year Master Builder Guarantee and firm quotes, has made JDBuilders a trusted name in the New Zealand construction industry. Jeffery’s reputation for excellence attracts clients like Caroline Eve to trust JDBuilders with their projects.

“The spacious layout, with thoughtful touches throughout, makes the Caroline Eve shopping experience all the more enjoyable,” says Dennison.
