Rules of design: how Lulu Wilcox brings colour to interiors

Lulu Wilcox: I have always had an interest in interior design, as well as property development. Over the years, friends and family came to me for advice – not only for fashion but also their living and working spaces. I was regularly being consulted on prop styling and colour palette decisions for my fashion and celebrity photoshoots, but ultimately it was a pivot from my work in the fashion styling space that has led me deeper down the path of interior design.

In 2020, due to Covid, much of my work in fashion styling changed and I noticed that many of my clients and friends were needing assistance creating enjoyment and enhancement in their living spaces instead.

LW: I have been a creative person and an avid lover of colour from a very young age. As a kid, I loved crafting and creating and have always loved ultimately being in control of an overall look and elements of the design process. This creative streak led me to complete a degree in costume design, which has ultimately introduced me to so many other forms of design.

LW: I truly believe fashion and interiors go hand in hand. Working closely with people impacts how quickly you need to get to know someone and their likes and dislikes, as well as building an authentic rapport. My years in fashion styling has made me very adaptable to clients’ needs, their individual tastes and what excites them, whilst still being able to guide them towards what will ultimately work best for them in terms of aesthetics. As well, of course, how it will make them feel because at the end of the day they need to feel comfortable and happy with my choices.

I also love the fact that my background in fashion design enables me to look at different fabrics and materials in unique ways and to quickly identify a client’s personality and style. This really helps me establish a holistic view of a person and their design desires.

LW: I love to approach every new project as a clean slate. No matter how much your last client loved what you created for them, you need to assume the next person is going to be the complete opposite. Even if the projects and people are very similar, a clean slate ensures the client gets exactly what they want and need.

I also love to bring a great energy and new ideas to the table. A lot of people come to an interior designer because they feel lost or unsure about what they are wanting for their project. Coming in with a fresh pair of eyes and a good energy helps to start things off on the right note. 

So much of what I do is people-focused. I spend time in consultation and delving into what the client wants to achieve out of the project – not just in aesthetic, but also how they will feel in the space once it’s complete. Therefore, it’s so important that the energy is right from the very beginning.

LW: Dip your toes in – it does not have to be walls of colour. Use soft furnishings or ‘semi-permanent’ items like cushions, throws, or even a bold framed print. If you decide you don’t like it, then it’s a very simple and less costly change to make. This gives you the opportunity to play.

I also sometimes suggest coming at this from a seasonal angle – perhaps using deep, rich colour throughout the winter months, and something lighter and brighter through spring and summer. You never know what styles you may love until you try.

LW: My home is a real home. I don’t believe in living in an environment that isn’t a reflection of you. I live with my two daughters so it is filled with colour, personality, and pieces I’ve collected throughout the years that have wonderful memories attached. I have also incorporated a great mix of textures and old and new, but I am currently coveting and planning for my next ‘restyle’. My home is my sanctuary for myself and my girls. I want it to feel full of love, life and amazing memories.

LW: I love that there is a freedom to have elements of all different styles in interiors right now. Design doesn’t have to be straightforward and I love that if you want to mix styles that traditionally haven’t been put together, you can.

I am also loving custom designing special pieces for clients, whether that’s with monogramming or signature rugs, for example. I love to encourage people to dream a bit with their home styling – after all, it is the place where you spend most time.

LW: I truly love the people. Engaging with someone and helping them achieve their interior dreams is incredibly rewarding. I also love knowing that this contributes to their enjoyment of their spaces – making people feel fantastic within themselves and the spaces they inhabit is a huge inspiration for me.

LW: I am working on some very special projects right now. I am working a bit more in the real estate space to help homeowners achieve their goals, whether it be for the pre-sale process or when they have moved into their new abode and want it to make it feel like their home. I’m a dreamer, so I’m always looking forward to the next big project – no matter what it may be.

LW: Interior styling, and hiring someone to help you with the process, shouldn’t feel out of reach. I work with all types of clients on projects big and small, and I enjoy making it accessible to everyone – whether you are buying or selling, or simply want to bring a bit of life to your living room. A fresh pair of eyes may be all you need.
