Watch the Full Process of this Basement Conversion
This basement conversion was designed to create a fully self-contained second dwelling beneath the existing home.
Featuring full kitchen facilities along with separate power and water services.
The space provides a sustainable secondary income opportunity for the family — all without impacting their day-to-day living above.

This self-contained dwelling includes two large bedrooms with walk-in wardrobes and an abundance of natural light. It also features a full bathroom, a separate toilet, and a dedicated laundry room with an additional second toilet — making this home comfortable, practical, and perfectly suited for independent living or long-term rental.

This innovative waterproofing system effectively creates a sealed “waterproof box” within the basement, allowing the internal structure to be built in a dry, protected environment. External moisture is safely redirected through perimeter channel drains, preventing dampness and moisture from entering the living space — making it an ideal solution for New Zealand basements constructed from concrete block.

Alder Homes. Alder Homes is a family-owned Auckland building company specialising in major home renovations and extensions. Established in 2016, we work across Auckland, with a particular focus on Pukekohe and Drury, East Auckland, and established central Auckland suburbs. We also undertake selected new builds, recladding and second dwelling projects.
Led by Director and Licensed Building Practitioner Tim Alder, a qualified carpenter with almost 30 years of hands-on residential construction experience, Alder Homes brings extensive practical knowledge of New Zealand homes to every project. Tim is particularly experienced in renovations, extensions and structural alterations, where problem-solving and an understanding of existing construction are essential.
Many of our clients come to us before plans have been drawn. We help homeowners understand what may be possible, establish a realistic budget and coordinate the architects, engineers, quantity surveyors and other specialists needed to move from an initial idea through design and into construction. We also work with clients who already have developed or consented plans.
As a small, owner-led company, clients deal directly with Tim and Tracey throughout their project, with clear communication, careful planning and support when decisions need to be made.
Alder Homes is a member of New Zealand Certified Builders, and eligible projects can be supported by the Halo 10 Year Residential Guarantee.
