Contemporary Country Home banner

Located in the outskirts of Hamilton, this contemporary country home is proof that budget is no barrier to unique architectural style. Drawn by its secluded setting and a towering stand of trees, for this couple it was a case of love at first sight.

Architect Evan Mayo was briefed to design a new family home with a modern spacious interior that provided flexible, adaptable spaces. With these parameters in mind, its design emphasises family living and comfort, and provides privacy and seclusion. Siting the house to the rear of a square plot allows for unobscured views of an expanse of verdant green landscape and takes into account both the view and long shadows cast by an established stand of kahikatea trees.

Inspired by the 6000sqm plot, they were convinced it would be the ideal location to raise their family they secured the site and were keen to make their mark.

The design of this home captures a sense of both the past and present. The layout simply divides the space into three zones along a central corridor. The living areas and bedrooms are positioned to benefit from the northerly aspect over the property. One end of the house is devoted to family living with an open plan kitchen, dining, living room, office and music room. Situated at the opposing end of the house are the main bedroom, ensuite, two bedrooms, family bathroom and laundry. Above on the smaller first floor is a family living area, guest bedroom and ensuite.

The low maintenance cladding and large verandas combine to preserve the rural feel. Living areas take advantage of the views with a high stud and north facing floor to ceiling windows. Together, the materials, finishes, and details create an open, inviting, light-filled space that captures majestic views of the surrounding landscape.

Mayo describes the result as ‘an extraordinary house for a client with an ordinary budget’. This house is a testament to the owner’s belief that design really does matter, and an understanding that architects add value regardless of budget. Their vision for a relaxed country home realised, the true success of this project lies within the combined endeavour of owner, architect and contractor to work together to create a home that not only met budget, but has exceeded the clients expectations for creating a family home with a country lifestyle at its heart

About the
Professional

We believe people are at the heart of design, and bringing great design to our clients and communities we work with is our ultimate goal. Our practice is inspired by developing innovative ideas that are generated from the positive relationships with our clients. We also endeavour to ensure the experience of working with us is satisfying and memorable.

We remain flexible and communicative throughout the entire design and construction process to ensure that our design solutions reflect the needs and desires of our clients. We believe the creation of a design solution is not a solitary stoke of genius: but the result of a process that involves early ideas being tested, discussed, drawn and modelled, then re-considered and re-developed, to create a unique project that suits our clients’ brief and location.

The successful delivery of a project is not only possible by innovative design but includes sound technical solutions, thorough comprehensive documentation and strong collaborative relationships with fellow consultants and contractors. We receive consistent praise from contractors and consultants about our documentation, which results in fewer on-site variations and more control of the final project cost.

Our practice endeavours to focus attention on every detail throughout a project, and our work ranges in scale, type and budget.
