Fitzroy Courtyard House by Imogen Pullar Architecture brings together considered expansion, energy efficiency and architectural clarity within a tightly constrained urban site. The brief called for additional space to support a growing family, while reducing the home’s environmental impact and preserving its original character.
A new two-storey recycled brick addition is positioned along the rear laneway, creating a sheltered north-facing courtyard and enhancing spatial flow. Existing west-facing glazing was reconstructed using thermally modified timber and upgraded with double glazing to improve thermal performance. The home is now fully electric, powered by rooftop solar and supported by passive design strategies.
Managing heat gain to the western façade was a key focus. Shade Factor worked closely with the architect to deliver a custom Warema ZIP external blind spanning 4.5 metres. The concealed system provides effective sun control while preserving the minimal expression of the façade. Fully retractable, the blind offers thermal comfort in summer and uninterrupted outlooks when not in use.
The result is a flexible, efficient and enduring home that respects its heritage setting while meeting the demands of contemporary family life.
