Little Brick House by Ben Callery Architects is a compact, energy-efficient secondary dwelling that explores how thoughtful design can support downsizing, multigenerational living and long-term sustainability.
Located behind an existing home in Northcote, the two-storey brick residence was designed for a mother looking to remain connected to her family and neighbourhood. With a footprint of just 60 square metres per level, the design prioritises openness, natural light and flexibility to create a generous sense of space.
The planning considers future accessibility, with a downstairs guest room that can become the main bedroom, and a living area that opens to a private courtyard. Upstairs, the main bedroom is immersed in tree canopy views, complemented by a study nook and secondary living space.
High-performance windows, recycled brickwork and rooftop solar support the home’s all-electric, passive design. On the street-facing western façade, motorised Warema external venetian blinds from Shade Factor ensure year-round thermal comfort while maintaining outlook and architectural clarity.
