A definitive statement in modern tropical geometry, "The Floating Box House" at central Singapore showcases RT+Q Architects' mastery of structural drama and poetic form. The architecture is characterized by a monolithic upper volume that appears to levitate over a transparent, light-filled ground floor. This "floating box" is enveloped in a rhythmic series of operable timber louvers, which serve as a dynamic skin―modulating privacy, sunlight, and natural ventilation throughout the day. By elevating the primary living mass, the design creates a shaded, permeable sanctuary on the ground level that seamlessly integrates with the long lap pool and manicured greenery. This project exemplifies the firm's signature "counter-intuitive" approach, where rigorous structural precision meets an effortless sense of weightlessness.
About RT+Q Architects
Founded in 2003 by Rene Tan and TK Quek, RT+Q Architects is a leading Singapore-based practice recognized for its rigorous exploration of form, space, and materiality. The firm’s design philosophy often involves "counter-intuitive" thinking―reimagining familiar typologies to create unexpected yet functional architectural solutions. RT+Q’s works are characterized by a meticulous attention to proportion and a deep sensitivity to the tropical context. Under the visionary leadership of Rene Tan―the 2016 President’s Design Award "Designer of the Year"―the firm has built an internationally acclaimed portfolio of private homes and commercial landmarks that redefine modern tropical living.
