Beyond boundaries: the versatility & sophistication of frameless glass solutions

Architectural trends: a modern aesthetic

The architectural landscape in Australia has experienced a notable shift towards frameless glass fencing, driven by its sleek and modern appearance. Clear glass, offering unobstructed views and a sense of openness, has become a favoured choice, aligning seamlessly with contemporary design preferences.

Customisation options, including frosted, tinted, or textured glass, further contribute to the attraction of frameless glass fencing, enhancing its adaptability to diverse design needs.

Compared to traditional fencing options such as semi-frameless and aluminium fences, frameless glass fencing stands out in terms of design and aesthetics for several reasons, shares Chamoun.

“Frameless glass fencing offers clear views, seamlessly connecting the pool and garden areas. This contrasts with semi-frameless and aluminium fencing, which can block views and disrupt the visual flow of the outdoor space.

“The minimalist and contemporary design of frameless glass fencing complements modern architectural trends in Australia, adding sophistication to outdoor spaces. This modern aesthetic is not as easily achieved with semi-frameless or aluminium fences.”

Additionally, adherence to Australian standards is a key factor in the superiority of frameless glass fencing. The absence of conductive spigots in frameless glass fencing ensures better compliance with safety standards, providing a safer poolside experience for homeowners.

Enhanced safety & functionality: a holistic approach

In tandem with aesthetic advancements, the industry has witnessed a commitment to enhancing safety features. Self-closing gates and customisable latches have emerged as vital components, ensuring secure and user-friendly operation without compromising the elegant look of frameless glass fencing.

“Safety is a paramount concern in developing and installing frameless glass fencing, especially considering its growing popularity in residential and commercial spaces,” shares Chamoun.

The use of specially engineered glass is central to the safety of frameless glass fencing. Toughened safety glass, which is significantly stronger than standard glass, is commonly used.

“This type of glass provides robustness and durability and ensures reduced injury risk in the rare event of breakage, as it shatters into less harmful fragments.”

Durability & maintenance

The durability and maintenance of frameless glass fencing have seen significant improvements with the application of advanced protective coatings like EnduroShield.

These coatings reduce the need for frequent cleaning, maintaining attractiveness.

“EnduroShield provides a clear, invisible shield on the glass that repels water and contaminants, which has been shown to reduce cleaning efforts by up to 90%,” shares Chamoun. “Impressively, when applied to new glass, the coating can maintain its protective qualities for up to a decade.”

This innovation has not only made frameless glass fencing a more appealing option but has also addressed concerns about the traditionally high maintenance associated with glass.

Enhancing the connection between indoor & outdoor spaces

Playing a pivotal role in enhancing the connection between indoor and outdoor spaces, frameless glass transforms the overall experience of a property. The seamless visual integration it provides fosters a greater sense of openness, making both indoor and outdoor areas feel more expansive. The sleek and modern design of frameless glass fencing adds sophistication to a property, complementing contemporary architectural styles and enhancing the aesthetic appeal of well-designed landscapes or pool areas.

Natural light and ambience are further influenced by frameless glass fencing, allowing unobstructed light flow between indoor and outdoor spaces. This not only makes indoor spaces feel more vibrant and welcoming but also contributes to a harmonious living experience by providing a visual connection to the outdoor environment.

The enhanced connection facilitated by frameless glass fencing can also have a positive impact on a property’s value, says Chamoun.

“The combination of aesthetic appeal, modern design, and the enhanced connection between indoor and outdoor spaces can also contribute to an increase in property value. Frameless glass fencing is often seen as a desirable feature for prospective buyers or tenants who value the blend of functionality, safety, and style it offers.”

Success story: form & function in harmony

A recently completed project by Glazed Co. is a testament to how frameless glass can impact both form and function. The client’s brief was for a seamless outdoor pool space, requiring nearly 70 linear metres of glass fencing.  The client's vision was a fence that didn't detract from the home or pool house with visible fixings.

Achieving this involved an innovative approach that combined three distinct fixing styles: channel fixing integrated into the cut concrete channel, custom fabricated stainless steel channel fixing, and stand-off fixing.

“This strategy ensured that the fence maintained a fixation-free appearance, a crucial aspect of the client's brief, while adhering to the rigorous safety standards set forth by AS 1926.1, AS1288, and AS3000.”

The outcome was a sleek, modern, and elegant pool fencing system that delivered on the client’s desire for an uninterrupted panoramic view of their beautiful pool and landscaping. The meticulously engineered cantilevered glass panel over the pool's spillway, devoid of visible hardware, is a standout feature, showcasing innovative design and precision engineering.

The use of high-quality materials like matte black 2205 marine-grade stainless steel and the integration of Polaris soft-closing hydraulic hinges on gates further exemplified the project's commitment to combining safety with a high-end aesthetic.

“The project's success lay not just in meeting but exceeding the client's expectations, delivering a solution that was both visually stunning and functionally superior, enhancing the overall experience of the property.”
