Archgola’s new gable profile creates a seamless transition between roof and canopy for this Ashburton home

Kiwis are drawn to the outdoors. Whether it’s a morning coffee, Sunday family barbeque, or late-night chats with friends, our outdoor living spaces are the backdrop for many treasured moments. Of course, with New Zealand’s temperamental weather patterns and harsh summer sun, outdoor shade solutions are a must. Not only do they offer protection from the elements for both skin and furniture, they transform a fair-weather space into a second living room that can be used year-round.

Selecting the right canopy for your home can be a challenge. Not only are you considering size and location, the canopy’s roof profile can have a significant impact on the overall feel of the space. If you’re adding a canopy to an existing property, you want to find a style that feels as if it has been there all along. For this gable-roofed Ashburton home, a seamless transition from roof to canopy was a key part of the brief.

“The client wanted to be able to spend time outside and enjoy their beautiful garden with protection from the weather,” says Archgola Group Marketing Manager Katrina Evans. “Their home has a gable roof that covers a smaller outdoor living space; as they wanted to extend that living area, they were looking for a gable canopy that would flow with the existing roof line.”

Having recently refreshed their product line to include a gable profile, Archgola were perfectly positioned to deliver the desired solution.

“We have recently added gable-shaped roofs to our Archgola Linear canopy range. It was perfect timing for these clients,” Katrina explains. “Because every roof line has unique gradients, we customise all designs to suit the property, as is the case with this home. We were able to accurately match the roof’s gradient, creating an elegant transition between the existing roof and the canopy. The canopy has an overall span of 24 square metres.”

To complement the home’s palette, the clients selected a Blue/Grey polycarbonate roofing with a Dulux Protexture Monument powder coat for the canopy’s aluminium and steel frame.

“The polycarbonate roofing provides excellent UV protection and shields from wind, rain, hail, and snow — which was important for this Ashburton property located in a snow zone. We offer three tint options with varying degrees of light transmission and heat reduction, lowering glare and helping to maintain a comfortable temperature on hot summer days. Dulux’s Protexture range is ideal for the metal frame as it is scratch-resistant and doesn’t show fingerprints, which helps to keep the canopy looking good as new.” 

The client is also planning to add some outdoor blinds to the canopy, creating a sheltered space to enjoy their garden year-round, Katrina explains. 

“Archgola will custom make the blinds to fit their space, and the client has the option of five ThermaShade mesh tints at 5% opening, or a clear PVC solution.”

A Cook’s Beach batch has also welcomed the addition of gable solution. The canopy has doubled the living space at the holiday home and matched the converted garage’s gable profile, creating a delightful addition to the property.
