In this series, we share the style cues homeowners can take from some of Australia’s most beautiful shops, hotels, bars and restaurants. Get ready to be inspired!

Positioned in the inner-Melbourne suburb of Armadale, Auterra Wine Bar is a beautiful interior project completed by IF Architecture, a firm that specialises in design solutions anchored in place, history, community and character. Showcasing an artfully layered interior scheme that reflects the complexities of wine through colour, shape and texture, Auterra is a sublime interpretation of purpose into place.

Deep red and burgundy form the foundation on which this interior theme is built, with blush pink, orange and yellow making appearances throughout. Australian hardwoods, copper and brass provide tactile relief within the rich environment, each material providing depth and character through an ever-evolving patina.

The furniture selection is simple yet elevated. Chairs are upholstered in leather and velvet, shapes are rounded and the finishes are opulent, particularly the dining table with metallic inlay. The lighting is raw and simple, casting a warm glow across the entire establishment andwelcoming guests into a relaxed and inviting atmosphere.

Use metallics in unexpected ways

Copper and brass are used throughout Auterra Wine Bar in sophisticated and unexpected ways, from the bar benchtop and overhead shelving to the drawers and dining table inlay. It’s a design choice that creates a sense of character within the interior, and one that can be incorporated into residential homes. Simply add metallic finishes in surprising places, such as cabinetry doors, kitchen island cladding, or even door frames and walkways.

Create a sense of opulence with ‘rich’ colours

Many homeowners shy away from using dramatic colours such as red, burgundy and orange for fear that it might make a space feel smaller. However, success lies in the placement and pairing of highly pigmented colours. Recreate the Auterra Wine Bar look with a tonal colour palette, and by positioning the deepest hues at or below eye level, with lighter hues used in greater amounts and at higher elevations.

Use lighting to create ambience

Lighting is so important to creating the right look and feel within an interior environment. IF Architecture has chosen to use raw, almost industrial lighting in the front dining space of Auterra Wine Bar, the warm and muted globes building a sense of intimacy in the space. Meanwhile, refined and linear pendant lights are used in the upstairs dining room to reflect a more formal setting. This is a rule worth following in residential projects: choose a lighting style that reflects the mood and purpose of your room.
