By Francis Gp Architects
This grand historic home was originally designed in 1957 for C.I. Nathan Esq by Gummer and Ford Architects and Engineers, then altered by D.G. Swan in 1963.
Our brief was to upgrade areas that had previously been altered to blend with the original, and to retain the original Gummer and Ford design details including fireplaces, architraves and general detailing, with external landscaping and pergolas left in place. With close attention to detail in all spaces, the overall result throughout is understated fine-living luxury.
Contemporary finishes in the new bathrooms and kitchens contrast with the traditional detail while remaining sympathetic to the intention of the original architectural concept. The project added two bedrooms with associated ensuites and decks to the upper floor where the property enjoys views across the Waitemata and Pukekawa, the Auckland Domain.
The existing bedrooms in the western wing of the house were redesigned to incorporate a casual sitting area and separate laundry.
