Colour is often one of the most visible decisions in an interior, but arriving at the right palette involves more than selecting a shade from a chart. On Friday 23 October, Auckland practice Pac Studio will explore that process through Living in Colour, an evening hosted in collaboration with Dulux.

The event will begin with a presentation from Pac Studio director Sarosh Mulla, looking at how the practice approaches colour across renovation and new-build projects, alongside an introduction to colour theory. Rather than stopping at the presentation, the evening then moves into a practical workshop.

Each attendee will begin with a small personal object, such as a piece of fabric, photograph or favourite object, and use it as the starting point for developing a colour palette. The exercise considers how colour relates to the object itself and how the ideas introduced during the presentation can inform the palette as it develops.

That approach places colour within a broader design process. Rather than treating it as a final decorative layer, the workshop considers how colour can be tested, related and developed in response to other elements. It reflects the way colour decisions can operate across both renovation and new-build work, where material, light, context and existing conditions can all influence the eventual palette.

There is something particularly useful about the format: Pac Studio is not simply talking about colour, but sharing the thinking behind its approach and giving participants the opportunity to put those ideas into practice. The event takes place at Pac Studio’s Auckland studio on 23 October, with doors opening at 5pm. It is now fully booked following a strong response, with another event planned for November and the workshop set to return in the new year.

For those considering colour within a residential project, the evening offers a practical way into a decision that can have a significant effect on how a space is experienced.
