How to choose a fireplace and tips to get you started

Before you make the decision to invest in a fireplace, it's important to understand the numerous reasons and benefits of having one in your home. Having a fireplace can not only add a cosy ambience to your home, but it can also improve the overall value and aesthetic appeal of your living space. Additionally, fireplaces can serve as an efficient heating source, reducing energy costs during the colder months. They also provide a perfect focal point for family gatherings and romantic evenings. It's important to fully understand all these benefits so you can set reasonable expectations about what your potential fireplace will be able to do for you.

When it comes to adding a fireplace to your home, your needs, lifestyle, and the size of your room are all important factors to evaluate. Think about how often you'll use the fireplace and what fuel you prefer. Consider your daily routine and how a fireplace would fit into it. And of course, make sure the size of the room can accommodate a fireplace and that it's placed in a safe and strategic location. By thinking about these factors first, you’ll build a strong foundation from which to make a suitable choice for a fireplace that not only enhances the ambience of your home but also meets all of your practical needs.

A fireplace can add charm, warmth, and ambience to any home. However, before deciding to install one, it's important to carefully consider all the implications, especially the costs. In addition to the initial purchase and installation cost, which can range anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars, a fireplace also requires regular maintenance, such as cleaning and chimney inspections. It's also important to factor in the cost of firewood or other fuel sources as well as the space they’ll take up in the room. Despite these considerations, many homeowners find that the benefits of a fireplace, such as the warmth, atmosphere, sophistication, increased home value and cosy family gatherings, make it a worthwhile investment. By weighing the pros and cons and consulting with experienced fireplace professionals, you’ll feel more confident about your investment and the decisions you make going forward.

With many of the practical considerations covered it's time to start looking at all the different options available. The first place to start with respect to this is by narrowing it down to the type of fireplace you want which includes the following:

Bioethanol fireplaces

Bioethanol fireplaces are becoming increasingly popular due to their clean burning nature, lack of smoke and soot, and easy installation. They use bioethanol fuel which is a renewable energy source made from plant-based materials such as corn and wheat. One of the main appeals to them is that they don't require a chimney or venting system, allowing them to be placed almost anywhere in the home.

Electric fireplaces

Electric fireplaces are another popular choice due to their ease of installation and low maintenance needs. They use electricity as their energy source and are typically used for supplemental or accent heating. Some models even come with the option of remote control, allowing you to adjust the heat and flame intensity from anywhere in the room. Using LED lights, an electric fireplace can also convincingly replicate the ambience of a natural flame.

Gas fireplaces

Gas fireplaces are a great choice for those looking for an efficient and clean heating source. They typically use natural gas or propane as their energy source and are known to have fast heat output, making them an ideal choice for colder climates. Additionally, gas fires can be turned on or off with the simple click of a switch, giving you complete control over your heating needs.

Wood burning fireplaces

Wood fireplaces add a classic and cosy ambience to any home. They use real wood, logs or other combustible materials as their fuel source and are usually installed in homes with an existing chimney. One of the main benefits of a woodburning fireplace is that it can be used to supplement your home's heating needs, saving you money on energy bills. Wood fires also add incredible atmosphere to a space when lit that few can match.
