"A shotcrete pool is a structure; it's built to a design specific to that pool and designed by an engineer with all the supporting paperwork by the engineer, contractor, and council," Chris explains. This means that concrete pools can withstand significant environmental stressors, such as liquefaction, due to their weight and the ability to incorporate pressure relief valves.

Shotcrete pools can be created in any shape or depth, can stand alone or be built into the ground, and have the advantage of self-repair.

"As a structure, it requires a 50-year guarantee on the structural integrity and is built to a design standard and specification. "The majority of the structure in most cases is in the ground, but concrete has shown to be very durable in any weather condition if you look at building structures," Chris explains. The installation process

Installing a concrete pool is a meticulous process that differs significantly from other types of pools. The aim is to excavate a hole that matches the exact shape of the pool. This precision allows the ground to form the walls, with only the top 300mm being formed separately. "The floor is graded to match the pool floor shape, and where this isn’t possible, the pool shape is formed using formwork," Chris describes. This method ensures that the pool can support loads whether it is full or empty, showcasing another point of difference that concrete offers.

The shotcrete is then pneumatically applied to the formwork, which allows for any of the special requirements in the design such as lighting.

Maintaining a concrete pool involves careful attention to water balance. Chris emphasises that "concrete loves water" and reaches higher strength levels when submerged. However, improper water balance can lead to the extraction of calcium from the concrete and grout, which is also a concern for fibreglass and vinyl pools. Ensuring the correct water chemistry is therefore crucial to maintaining the pool’s integrity and longevity.

Chris mentions several exciting options, such as polycarbonate viewing windows, covers that rise from the floor, fluorescent tiles, and moveable floors that can transform into walkable decking.
