In general, it is a far more consistent ventilation system, with controlled airflow being provided through ducts that draw fresh air in from outdoors and expel stale air through the exact mechanism. It uses the same clean, fresh air as natural methods, but distributes it more evenly throughout an interior. This allows for more consistent cooling where required and provides cooling as the air is drawn through ducts that help cool it on its transition.

Additionally, some buildings are not suitable for natural solutions, as windows and doors cannot be installed in the middle of a large floor. This makes mechanical systems far more effective and helps prevent humidity and staleness throughout a building, including areas where it is needed most.

Ceiling-Mounted

Ceiling-mounted systems are an affordable and accessible way to provide smaller spaces with consistent airflow. They channel ambience in from outside and can provide intensive cooling to a residential property or small office. They're considered desirable as extremely affordable that provide significantly greater cooling capabilities than natural ducts.

Another advantage of ceiling-mounted units is that they are easy to instal and can be placed almost anywhere. The most popular way to mount is typically higher than doorframes or other wall features. This makes them a preferred cooling solution for apartment buildings and small offices.

Heat Recovery Ventilation Systems

Mechanical extract ventilation using heat recovery works by extracting moisture and staleness from the environment and recirculating the clean air through an interior space, along with any heat recovered from the extraction process. It is typically employed in attic spaces and areas that experience high levels of moisture.

These units are excellent ways of preventing damage to interiors from mould growth and other consequences of excessive humidity. They also have applications in commercial buildings, especially in areas with poor natural ventilation.

Smart Ventilation Devices

Smart devices and passive ventilation systems can be used to remotely control different ducts in a smart home, whether these are natural outlets such as smart windows or mechanical systems. Smart devices automatically detect moisture and heat levels around them and respond as appropriate. These devices are easy to instal, simply plugging into a wall in many cases.

These devices require access to other smart devices in a property and are less accessible for old-fashioned buildings. However, they offer outstanding efficiency and control where they can be used.

Factors to Consider Before Purchase

Important factors to consider include:

• What is the purpose of ventilation (cooling, humidity control, etc.)
• Is the area smart-compatible?
• How much space is there for the system to be installed?

Installation

Trained professionals will carry out the installation of most mechanical ventilation systems. Often, the supplier will offer a bespoke installation service - this should always be checked before purchasing. If an installation service is not provided, the buyer should contact local contractors and find one specialising in these systems.

Care & Maintenance

Regular inspection from trained professionals is advised for all systems to monitor performance and replace ventilation components where necessary. Inspections should be carried out annually for larger systems and every couple of years for smaller devices. Smart devices may require calibration from time to time but are generally low-maintenance. Additional care often includes regular dusting to avoid build-up and prevent the unit from becoming clogged.
