6 popular types of downlights: styles, prices, bulbs, and FAQs

A fixed downlight is a type of lighting fixture specifically designed to emit light directly downward without any adjustable angle. It's embedded within the ceiling, resulting in a neat and flush appearance. Being the most prevalent and cost effective type of downlight, fixed downlights are frequently found in areas like kitchens, lounges, and hallways where direct overhead illumination is desired.

Fixed downlights can range substantially in price, from as low as $5 for a basic fixed downlight to upwards of $500 for a high-end, luxury downlight.

A recessed downlight is a type of lighting fixture designed to sit flush with the ceiling, with its main components hidden within the ceiling itself. The only visible part is usually the trim and the bulb. Its unique design allows the light to shine directly downward from an inset position, rather than protruding from the ceiling or hanging down. This embedded installation results in a streamlined and unobtrusive appearance in a room.

Recessed downlights are often used in kitchens and living rooms and can range in price from $10 for a basic downlight all the way to $250 for a high-end model.

A gimbal downlight is a downlight fitted with a pivoting mechanism, allowing the light direction to be adjusted. Unlike fixed downlights that emit light straight down, gimbal downlights can be tilted to spotlight specific areas or objects, such as artwork or architectural details. This adjustability makes them versatile for those wanting to occasionally shift their lighting focus or use them for task lighting in specific areas. Due to these properties gimbal downlights are often used in commercial settings.

Prices for Gimbal downlights range from $30 for an individual light all the way up to $300.

A wall wash downlight is a specific type of recessed lighting fixture designed to cast light in a way that it evenly illuminates, or "washes," a wall. The beam of light from these fixtures spreads wider than typical downlights, allowing it to act as accent lighting showcasing a wall's surface, highlight textures, and display artworks or features more effectively. The design and positioning of the fixture ensure that the wall receives consistent lighting, reducing shadows and creating an aesthetic appeal.

Wall wash downlights typically range from $20 to $130 for each light.

An eyeball downlight is a type of recessed lighting fixture characterised by its distinctive bulb that extends out from the fixture, resembling an "eyeball". This design allows the bulb to be tilted and rotated in different directions, providing targeted illumination. Such downlights are commonly used to spotlight specific areas or features in a room, such as artwork, bookshelves, or mantelpieces.

Eyeball downlights can range from as low as $7 to $250 for a high-end eyeball downlight.

A square downlight is a type of recessed lighting fixture with a square-shaped faceplate or trim. Unlike the typical circular design, these downlights have a geometric shape. They provide direct illumination and are often chosen to match square or grid-like architectural features in a room, giving a cohesive look. Square downlights are often used in modern office spaces, due to their contemporary design.

Individual square downlights tend to range from $40 to $130 for an individual light.

While understanding the different types of downlights is essential, it's equally important to be aware of the popular bulb options. Here they are:

Incandescent bulbs emit light by passing electricity through a tungsten filament. They offer a warm, inviting light and instant brightness. Key advantages include excellent colour rendering (making colours appear natural) and simple dimmability.

Mini versions of full-sized fluorescents, CFLs produce light by electrifying a tube containing argon and a touch of mercury vapour. They're energy-saving with a longer lifespan than incandescents. Their main advantages are reduced energy bills due to lower consumption and infrequent replacements.

LED lights emit light from an electrified semiconductor material. They are incredibly energy-efficient with a long lifespan, sometimes up to 25 times longer than incandescents, and come in varied colour temperatures. Major benefits of using an LED light include substantial electricity savings and minimal heat output.

A subtype of incandescents, halogen downlights utilise halogen gas for better energy efficiency and lifespan. They provide bright, clear light and are more energy-efficient than standard incandescents. Halogen bulbs excel in colour rendering and serve as a more energy efficient alternative to traditional bulbs while maintaining similar light quality.

What is the most energy efficient downlight?

The most efficient downlight is typically those that use an LED bulb, due to an LEDs long lifespan and low energy consumption.

How do I know which downlights to buy?

To choose which downlights to buy, consider factors like luminosity (brightness), colour temperature, energy efficiency, and compatibility with your room size and ceiling type.

Are downlights easy to install?

Installing downlights, as opposed to more traditional lighting fixtures, is fairly easy for those with some DIY experience, for example, installing LED downlights is known to be relatively straight forward. If you're at all unsure, or unfamiliar with electrical wiring, it's best to seek out a professional.

As you can see, there are many different types of downlights available; the type you go for all comes down to your own preference and the space you’re looking to light up. Each variant brings its own set of benefits. By taking a moment to explore these options, you can find a downlight that adds some style to your room, while lighting it up efficiently.
