Types of glass pool fencing - advantages, pricing and more

A glass pool fence features reinforced glass panels that are securely anchored at its base, with or without a frame. It is a type of fence that is growing in popularity as a convenient way to secure an area without disturbing the view.

It is seen as a quality product and one of the best ways to safely secure the area around a pool, the high visibility it offers being its most valued trait. Glass pool fencing panels are also incredibly strong making them a fantastic long term choice for homeowners.

There are a number of different types of glass pool fencing including framed, semi-framed and frameless.

The most common type of glass fencing is framed glass pool fencing. It is comprised of standard glass panels and stainless steel posts that secure them in place. Typically, the posts or frames are fixed securely into the ground first. After the panels are inserted into position, a top bar or rail is added to ensure that the fence is completely locked and fastened. The framed design offers a clear boundary and traditional look, making it a popular choice.

Semi-framed glass pool fencing is a combination of both framed and frameless fencing. Glass fencing panels remain attached to posts fixed into the ground, but the framing is minimised to encompass only the necessary area. A handrail might be featured at the top. The semi frameless design provides a more open view than fully framed fencing but maintains some structural elements to retain a sense of enclosure.

Frameless glass fencing is a smart, modern solution for situations when the most discreet barrier is required. This type of fencing is nearly invisible since it features no metal shell or visible joints - only a series of almost floating seamless panels. It provides an effective barrier for your pool area but not for your eyes.

Besides unobstructed landscaping and improved kerb appeal, frameless glass pool fencing also allows you to keep an eye on your children at all times. For these reasons, a frameless pool fence is often considered the most desirable of all three fencing options.

There are three different ways to install a frameless swimming pool fence. Spigot-fixed means that panels are bolted to the surface with high-quality stainless steel plugs. Slot-fixed fencing provides a feeling of glass emerging from underground given that’s where the slots are. Finally, a button-fixed installation fixes the panels below the ground by attaching bolts at strategic locations.

Glass pool fence costs vary depending on the type of fence you choose, the quality of glass selected and the installation costs of the professional. Generally speaking, pool fencing can cost between $200 - $600 per linear metre with the framed pool fencing being the most affordable and frameless glass fencing being the most expensive.

However, we do stress that the price range does vary quite a bit so it definitely pays to get a few quotes from a number of highly-rated professionals before making your decision.

There are a large number of choices out there and a lot of jargon so it’s always best to simplify the process by deciding what you need from your glass pool fencing. Are you aiming for privacy (which is actually possible with glass) or would you prefer something that is barely perceptible?

If privacy is one of your goals, then frosted glass panels are an excellent solution. It will block curious eyes, giving you peace of mind to relax in your space. If, on the other hand, you wish to secure the pool area but preserve your views, clear frameless glass fencing is probably the best choice you can make.

The safety and quality of your pool fence should also be prime things to consider before installation. The type and composition of glass for your pool fence will determine its reliability and longevity, so always choose a certified supplier and products that meet safety regulations and standards. The style of the fencing will depend on your individual preference, but never forget to think about your surroundings. A fence might look great in a brochure or showroom but it could be aesthetically unsuitable in your outdoor environment.

If you’re worried about its strength, it’s good to know that the fence is usually made out of tempered glass. That means the material was toughened by heating through a heat soaked process, followed by exposure to rapid cooling. This process directly impacts the strength of the glass panels, making them safer, ensuring that no dangerous shattering will take place. In the event of a breakage, it will react by spreading out in a bunch of harmless tiny crumbles.

Finally, a glass pool fence should also be durable and easy to maintain. Glass shows up dirt and dust more so than other materials so be sure to check with your suppliers about their easy-to-clean credentials.

Glass pool fencing offers a distinct, clean aesthetic that aligns well with modern architectural trends. Its clear panels provide a subtle yet elegant boundary, enhancing the visual continuity between indoor and outdoor spaces, while giving the homeowner uninterrupted views of their surroundings.

This design feature is particularly beneficial for homes where preserving a view or maintaining an open, airy feel is important. The inherent qualities of the material also help this type of fencing stand out. Glass is resistant to weathering, it's easy to maintain and relatively simple to install.

In terms of practicality, glass pool fences stand out for their robustness and security. The clear barriers allow for effortless supervision, ensuring safety, particularly in households with children and pets. Constructed from tempered glass, they are resilient against impacts and adverse weather, negating concerns about rust, or colour fading. This strength translates to ease of maintenance, typically requiring only simple cleaning every few months.

Customisation is another key feature of glass pool fences, as they accommodate diverse pool shapes and sizes. Whether your pool is a classic rectangular, a sophisticated oval, an irregularly shaped freeform, or a compact circular design, glass fencing can be adapted to suit.

In addition, all of this glass is recyclable, so a glass pool fence is an environmentally friendly option. And, the illusion of space created by these transparent barriers is beneficial for all size gardens, particularly smaller yards that desire a sense of openness.

Despite its delicate look, this type of glass fencing is quite strong. A powerful wind might shake the panels, but the toughened glass supported by equally strong stainless steel connectors can easily withstand a much stronger force. The previously mentioned tempered safety glass, which is almost universally used in pool fencing, is up to six times stronger than regular glass.

Glass fences do not require extensive maintenance and in most cases, occasional basic cleaning will suffice. The good news is that you don’t need any professional service or specialised maintenance products as you can easily do this yourself.

Water and regular liquid soap are all that is required but there are also some great glass cleaning products available too for an immaculate finish. Avoid any rough scrubbers, using a soft sponge instead. After rinsing, you can either use a dry cloth to polish the glass or let it air dry.

It’s up to you how often clean you choose to clean your glass fences as some will get more use than others and be in dustier environments. Some might do this monthly but others may only need to do it every 3 - 6 months or so.

Glass pool fencing needs no refinishing or upkeep. If you choose to add a self-cleaning glass coating, your maintenance duties could even turn from occasional to non-existent.

The Australian standards for pool fencing are fairly robust and rightly so given the potential tragedy of accidental drownings, especially with young children. When selecting a glass pool fencing professional, it’s important to make sure they are well versed in all the required regulations.

Some basic regulations include:

• Durable materials should be used at all times
• Minimum 1,200mm high fence
• No gaps of more than 100mm in the fence system (e.g. between posts and panels or at the bottom of the fence)
• Self-closing and self-latching gates
• Inside gate latches to stop children from entering on their own.

States across Australia also have their own pool safety regulations so be sure to ask your chosen professional about these requirements too.

For more details see the pool fencing requirements as stated by the Swimming Pool and Spa Association of Australia.
