What to know: bringing your ventilated garage door ideas to life

As homes continue to get smaller, it’s increasingly important to find ways to inject them with style and personality. Inside the home, this can often easily be achieved with paint colours, decor, pendant lighting or artwork. But what about the garage?

Although typically a space used for storing the car, garden tools and anything that may not fit in the rest of the home, the garage can be transformed with ventilated garage doors – including custom designs from Prestige Garage Doors.

Also commonly known as perforated doors, these garage doors are typically used in residential carports and multi-car garages such as apartment buildings, and are designed to allow airflow and natural light into a space that is often lacking. With plenty of designs available and the ability to be customised, this garage door option makes no compromises on aesthetic appeal.

What are the benefits of a ventilated garage door?

With plenty of designs available and the ability to be customised, this garage door option makes no compromises on aesthetic appeal.

Also commonly known as perforated doors, ventilated garage doors are typically used in residential carports and multi-car garages such as apartment buildings.

Improved air circulation

Garages can quickly become polluted with fumes from vehicles and products such as paints and solvents that may be stored away. These pollutants can make their way into the rest of the space and become particularly dangerous when fresh air can’t enter and circulate.

“A lot of our ventilated garage doors are used in multi-use garages, especially underneath a tall building or where lots of cars are coming and going,” says Gabi Broide from Prestige Garage Doors. “People might want to have their laundry down there and need a bit more airflow, otherwise it can get too hot in there.”

Temperature regulation

As well as allowing hot air from clothes dryers to escape, the airflow created by ventilated doors turns the garage into a much more inhabitable space, especially when cross-flow ventilation can be introduced.

Security

While perforations allow airflow, considerations must be made to ensure security – for the garage and any attached entry points to the rest of the home.

“In a residential application, we might install a ventilated door that’s 75 per cent full panel, for example, where you can’t see right through into the garage. It’s really a case-by-case basis in terms of what the requirements are, and what the application is. Are people storing things in there? If you’ve got a lot of airflow, you also need to ensure you can’t reach a hand through,” says Broide.

“We have quite a wide range of automation features, from mobile capability and WiFi connection to safety beams, that can also be incorporated.”

Creating custom designs for your ventilated garage door

Particularly in small homes and apartments, there can be limited ways to inject personality and design – especially on the exterior. While garage doors might not be the first design detail that comes to mind in achieving this, the options available from Prestige Garage Doors can elevate the street appeal of residential and commercial properties.

“We make everything in our factory and the most customisable and most popular option is the laser-cut aluminium door,” says Broide. “The designs can be any size and we can make designs that have writing, logos or graphics. Almost anything you can think of, we can make it part of the door’s design.”

This format can be used to create an entirely ventilated door, or just a single panel to meet any requirements.

Mesh and louvre designs are also available and can be customised to match other parts of a property’s exterior and meet any ventilation or privacy requirements.

“These doors can completely change the face of your property.”

Laser-cut Garage Doors

Prestige Garage Doors' laser-cut designs are a stylish, architectural take on the perforated garage door.

“It allows architects, builders and homeowners to have any pattern or picture laser cut into an aluminium door and can even be backed with plexiglass for a weather-tight option.

“The laser-cut garage door has a beautiful finish and is great for anyone trying to stand out from the rest.”
