With the ability to craft innovative and design-led fences, gates and balustrades, Warner Fences & Gates has developed a reputation for working with Kiwi homeowners and design professionals to develop designs that complement and elevate the style of their homes.
“We pride ourselves on designing gates with our customers and architects, and then making them specifically for the job. We’ve invested in a lot of technology such as laser cutting equipment and our own powder coating so we can offer flexibility around design and offer bold and brave solutions that might not be possible otherwise,” says Tim Austin, managing director at Warner Fences & Gates.
“Work with us to dream. In New Zealand, we like to be individualistic. Your gate can feel part of your identity – you see it as soon as you arrive home, so you can use it to express yourself. If you are engaging an architect or a landscape designer, you are trying to achieve something unique.”
Engaging the expertise of Warner Fences & Gates shouldn’t be any different.
“The gate is to complement your home and landscaping. The gate is the first thing that people see when they come to your property. It can be quite defining in your property’s overall design,” says Austin.

With a stunning combination of high-quality materials and finishes including vertically aligned western red cedar and Resene Rockcote masonry plaster complemented by matt black aluminium joinery, this Christchurch home wasn’t complete until Warner Fences & Gates installed a custom fin-style gate to match.
“Architects and landscape designers want to make sure all aspects of a facade tie in together. Our ability to be accurate in what we do and our ability to innovate with our equipment means we can work with these professionals to make sure we complement the design elements of the whole build,” says Austin. “This includes the colour, height, width, the materials and the shapes.”
For this project, Warner Fences & Gates was tasked with designing and constructing the gates to match and enhance the meticulous architectural details of the home.
“It was a strict requirement from the homeowner that it complemented the modern design of their new home,” says Peter Eden, Warner Fences & Gates’ GM for Canterbury. “He had an idea of what he wanted from what he’d seen elsewhere, and it just so happened that that design was similar to our own Taranaki Aluminium 50x25 fin-style fencing.
“From there, all it took was a meeting with our sales and project manager, Daniel Bryant, and we soon had a bespoke design agreed upon and quoted – influenced by the Taranaki product, but with its own distinctive and modern look.
“It certainly has been noticed within the industry and looks striking.”
Powdercoated by Warner Fences & Gates in Colorsteel’s sleek Flaxpod Matt, the gates effortlessly blend into the dark cedar weatherboard behind, with the upright panels of the gates lining up with the vertical cladding boards.
With the clients also conscious about security, the sliding drive gate is equipped with safety beams and is automated with a DEA Fast 24 Motor with the path gate utilising a magnetic lock. The path gate features an integrated keypad and audio/video intercom, and both gates can be operated by the homeowner from anywhere in the world by a smartphone app via the internet.
On approach, the vehicle gate can be opened with a quick touch of a button on the user’s mobile device or the keypad, eliminating the need for a separate remote control and enabling quick and easy entry for the residents.
“How the gate functions impacts its design,” says Austin. “Simple things need to be considered – if it’s a sliding gate, it’s got to slide somewhere and it’s better not to slide in front of the path gate. So you’ve got to consider the functionality elements as well.”
For this reason, it’s best to engage the expertise of Warner Fences & Gates at the concept design stage of a project.
The clients of this project in Christchurch were thrilled with the result of the gates – one of the final elements of the street-facing portion of their new build.
Our ability to be accurate in what we do and our ability to innovate with our equipment means we can work with these professionals to make sure we complement the design elements of the whole build.
“We offer a national service in New Zealand for designing and making gates, and we’ve got equipment in our business that enables us to offer a high level of individualism, accuracy and innovative designs,” says Austin.
