“The finishes have always been synonymous with luxurious living,” shares Bishop. “As is so often the case, the intensive nature of craftsmanship involved in the application of the finish comes through in the end result – the reflective surfaces of polished plasters, in particular, contribute to a sense of opulence.”

Venetian plaster is a craft that requires years of experience, and caution is advised when faced with claims of expertise from trades who have undertaken short courses. 

“You can’t apprentice in this trade in Australia, which means anyone can call themselves a Venetian plasterer. Most people claiming the skillset have done a short three-day course with someone that’s selling them a product. 

“If you are being quoted a low rate, there’s likely a reason for it, which  is that the installer is earning ‘normal’ rendering wages – not Venetian plasterer wages, which means the result might not be what you’re expecting.”

Clarity on the desired finish, scrutiny of previous projects, and understanding the intricacies of the installer's style are crucial considerations. Opting for a lower rate may lead to unsatisfactory results, emphasising the importance of investing in true craftsmanship.

“We’ve just completed a home in Elwood, and we’re the third rendering company they had do the work. Cheaper is not always better, and if you’re having to re-do the work down the line, it’s a false economy.”

Customisable finishes

Customisable colours and textures enable homeowners to curate inviting atmospheres, striking a balance between opulence and harmony with other design elements.

“We make our plaster with high quality materials like marble dust and slaked lime. The better the material, the better the durability and final smooth look of the finish.

“The incorporation of polymer additives has improved the flexibility and adhesion of plaster finishes, allowing for better resistance to cracking if the substrate moves, and ensuring the longevity of the plaster surface.”

Precision tools now used by craftspeople allow for intricate and detailed work, while eco-friendly formulations contribute to sustainability and healthier indoor air quality.

Common misconceptions about Venetian and polished plaster

Common misconceptions include equating Venetian and polished plaster, assuming anyone can apply them, limiting their use to walls, and perceiving them as fragile, shares Bishop.

It's crucial to understand the nuances, appreciating that Venetian plaster is a specific type, requiring skill and experience. These finishes can be applied to various surfaces, and when correctly done, they are not fragile but durable and long-lasting.

“While these finishes are commonly used on walls, they can also be applied to other surfaces such as ceilings, columns, joinery and furniture. The use of Venetian or polished plaster on diverse surfaces can create a cohesive look throughout a space.”

The cost of incorporating Venetian Plaster finishes varies, considering factors like plaster type, artisan skill, and project complexity.  

“While they are more expensive than standard paint, the increase in cost needs to be weighed against the unique and high-end results,” says Bishop. 

Proper maintenance is essential for preserving the beauty of Venetian and polished plaster finishes. Regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth, gentle cleaning with a damp sponge, and avoiding harsh cleaners are recommended. Professionals may be needed for periodic touch-ups or to address significant damage, ensuring these finishes withstand the test of time.
