Bathrooms are the most essential room in any home, and provide opportunities for creative design whether glitzy, glamorous or fun. From the sublime to the ridiculously cool, here are five exceptional-looking bathrooms from around New Zealand.
The en suite was a dark room, says Pip Maxwell of Pip Maxwell Interior Design. “Because we painted the walls as well and really embraced it, it highlights the tile as well.” The Buddy tapware in chrome is from Plumbline. Image Jackie Meiring

The family bathroom renovation by Ben Gommers at Gommers Construction. The Bisazza tiles are glass and needed a specialist tiler to work with the epoxy resin grout. “It’s quite an art,” says Ben.
The mirror is from Tessuti, says homeowner Maria Konings, and all other fittings are from Plumbline.
“I feel like it definitely makes a statement but it doesn't feel too overpowering,” says Candice Van Dyk of Mooi Design of this powder room in a Mosgiel house.
The wall-mounted Chap tapware in brushed brass is from Plumbline. “I love the dark colour with the brass.”
With small spaces it is actually better to play up the darkness, says Rose Schwarz of Schwarz Design. “It becomes a place of surrounding, evoking rest and relaxation.”
“The brushed nickel in the tapware is beautiful because it does pick up tones around it,” says Juliette Schwarz. “It's not too trendy either.”
The basin is Concrete Nation Arc in Clay from Plumbline and the tapware is Greens. “It's a New Zealand brand. It's going to be hardy for the kids,” says Sally Lines of Urban Lounge Interiors. Image Jay Drew
