The ultimate guide to frameless glass: innovative solutions for contemporary architecture

Glass by Design delivered the stunning frameless glass for this Cowes Bay, Waiheke project.

Among the myriad materials and techniques at the disposal of architects and designers, frameless glass is a symbol of contemporary elegance and ingenuity. At the heart of the attraction of frameless glass lies its ability to seamlessly blend form and function. We spoke to Glass by Design’s Henry McCambridge to understand the latest innovation solutions elevating contemporary architecture.

The unique allure of frameless glass

One of frameless glass’ most captivating attributes is its capacity to enhance a space by offering uninterrupted vistas. Whether it graces the expanse of a balcony, the entrance of a building, or the partitions within an interior space, frameless glass creates an ambience of spaciousness and sophistication.

“Unlike traditional framed glass, which can obstruct the flow of sunlight, frameless glass allows for the unimpeded passage of light, creating bright and inviting spaces,” shares Henry. “The infusion of natural light not only enhances the aesthetics of a building but also has tangible benefits for occupants, improving mood, productivity, and overall well-being.”

Whether it’s used for a balcony, doors, or partitions, frameless glass provides a sleek and modern look that instantly elevates the style of a space. It’s also safer than traditional, framed glass, says Henry.

“With no frame to break or shatter on impact, frameless glass is less likely to cause injury in the event of an accident.”

By utilising thicker glass and structural silicone, frameless glass structures achieve remarkable strength and resilience, ensuring the safety of occupants while maintaining a sleek and unobtrusive appearance.

“By employing larger interlayers and specially designed hardware, architects can create expansive, frameless designs that redefine spatial boundaries. These advancements not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of frameless glass, but also contribute to its structural integrity and longevity.”

Additionally, the incorporation of decorative interlayers and digital printing allows for customisations that add a unique and personal touch to architectural projects.

Frameless glass solutions support sustainable architecture

Sustainability is at the heart of contemporary architecture, and frameless glass supports eco-friendly design. Double and triple glazing and low E coating reduces heat gain and heat loss within the building, therefore increasing energy efficiency.

“Frameless glass allows buildings to harness passive solar heating by capturing and retaining solar energy,” shares Henry. “This helps reduce reliance on mechanical heating systems, leading to energy savings and lower greenhouse gas emissions.”

Advanced glazing technologies, such as low-emissivity coatings and insulated glass units, enhance the thermal performance of frameless glass installations. By minimising heat transfer, these solutions help regulate indoor temperatures, reduce heating and cooling loads, and improve energy efficiency.

Iconic frameless glass solutions

Frameless glass facilitates seamless transitions between indoor and outdoor spaces, blurring the boundaries between the two environments. Its transparency visually extends indoor spaces into the outdoors, creating a sense of continuity and harmony with the surrounding landscape. By maximising natural light and creating unobstructed views, frameless glass enhances the overall experience of a space, fostering a connection with nature that is essential in today's urban environments.

Iconic landmarks such as Le Louvre pyramid in Paris, the Apple Store on Fifth Ave in New York, the Grand Canyon Sky Walk, the Prada Store in Tokyo, and Frank Gehry’s Foundation Louis Vuitton in Paris are all examples of frameless glass’ indelible mark on the architectural landscape.

Technological advancements in glass mounting hardware have revolutionised frameless glass applications, enabling support for heavier panels and fostering both safety and aesthetic enhancements.

“With stronger structural engineering, larger and more robust glass panels redefine boundaries, seamlessly blending safety and style in modern architectural design. Decorative interlayers from metal mesh, artwork - digitally imagined- can be incorporated into glass.”

With ongoing advancements in technology and design, the potential of frameless glass in modern architecture is limitless. As architects continue to push the boundaries of innovation and creativity, frameless glass will undoubtedly remain at the forefront of architectural excellence, illuminating the world with its timeless beauty and unparalleled versatility.
