Fibreglass Pool of the Year 2025, Treetop Oasis by Mayfair Pools & Spas, speaks the design language of the architectural retreat’s bold style and surrounding rugged coastal landscape, beckoning one to dive into its cool, topaz waters.

Located on a sun-drenched cliff face in the hills of the Tutukaka Coast in Northland, east of Whangārei, New Zealand, Treetop Oasis embraces its namesake perched among the treetops, rocky surrounds, and wild bushland, while artfully orientated toward mesmerising Pacific Ocean views.

Enveloping the balcony of the architecturally designed residence is a custom fibreglass pool that appears to effortlessly float above the Tutukaka Coastline. This immaculate, five-sided lap pool is astonishingly suspended over the native bush below.

Finished with an infinity edge that melts into the horizon, the pool’s tranquil waters in the colour, Tongariro (named after the North Island’s national park and volcano) beautifully reflect the expansive ocean beyond.

Built with impeccable craftsmanship by Mayfair Pools & Spas, this bespoke fibreglass pool was crowned Fibreglass Pool of the Year 2025 by the Swimming Pool and Spa Association Awards (SPASA), a fitting praise for a structure that challenges convention and redefines possibility in residential fibreglass pool design in New Zealand.

Architecture with nature in mind

The residence, designed by local architectural studio Mandeno Design Limited, features a tailored pool envisaged to complement the home’s sharp, contemporary lines while remaining deeply respectful of the surrounding organic terrain. The challenge was twofold: deliver an elegant lap pool worthy of the dramatic natural surroundings, and do so on a steep, near-inaccessible hillside.

“The brief was deceptively simple,” says Clint Atkins, owner of Mayfair Pools “The client wanted to add a decent sized lap pool to the property. To make it work it required the best out of everyone involved, engineers, architects, and our team. I can say we’re all very proud of the outcome."

The pool was custom-designed and crafted onsite, carefully cantilevered out from the cliffside, its crisp geometric form echoing the balcony’s sharp angles.

The materials are an amalgamation of timber decking, natural stone and mosaic tiles reflecting the textures of the native bush and rocky coastline, while contrasting with the smooth fiberglass interior, allowing for a premium swimming experience.

At one-and-a-half metres wide by 15 metres long, the geometric pool’s dramatic infinity edges draw the eye outward, a perfect transition between pool and ocean, stillness and wonder.

Award-winning innovation from Mayfair Pools

This award-winning pool project is a feat of design and equally an impressive achievement of engineering. With such a steep, narrow, and logistically complex site, traditional pool-building methods were simply not an option.

“We specialise in custom-made fibreglass pools built onsite, which is a real game-changer for projects like this,” says Clint. “We can build on steep slopes, rooftops, or remote sites, anywhere a pre-moulded shell simply can’t go. This flexibility is what architects love and makes projects like this possible for their clients.”

He continues, “Many architects mistakenly believe concrete or pre-moulded fibreglass are their only options. But our system provides the strength and design freedom of concrete, but with the smooth, flexible finish and durability of fibreglass.”

Unlike pre-moulded fibreglass or concrete installations, Mayfair Pools & Spa's onsite construction system allowed the team to build the pool precisely to fit the property’s unique conditions, and without compromise.

A pool that defies gravity

Treetop Oasis demonstrates a keen fusion of engineering innovation and architectural storytelling. Its presence is commanding, yet calm. Its form is bold, yet somehow entirely at home in the surrounding lush landscape.

“With a steep sloped hill and difficult site access to contend with, plus the highly technical construction, let’s just say this project was not for the faint-hearted,” remarks Clint.

“We love working with projects and designers that push the boundaries, and this was one of them.”

The result speaks for itself, with a pool that doesn’t just sit atop the landscape, but becomes a part of it.

In Treetop Oasis, Mayfair Pools & Spas has crafted a sensory experience for the owners, providing a place of immersion, stillness, and connection with water and the surrounding site.

For architects and designers, it’s a reminder of what’s possible when daring concepts meet flexible, proven methods from trusted brands.
