Just because you have a small bathroom doesn’t mean you have to miss out on having stylish fittings. There are many options for wash basins and vanities that are perfect for a smaller sized bathroom.

Traditional, modern or minimalist – whatever your choice for decorating your bathroom, there are vanities and basins available to match your style. Even though a small bathroom presents a more challenging space to work in, it doesn’t mean you have to skimp on appearance.

When you have a smaller bathroom, one of the best ways to keep it neat and uncluttered is by installing a vanity unit which can hold – and hide from plain sight – your toiletries and makeup. And a clever basin can be fitted in a way that maximizes space and gives your smaller sized bathroom maximum functionality.

Elegant vanities for small bathrooms

A small bathroom does not have to mean a cluttered or messy space, with every available area covered in a collection of toiletries, makeup, shaving tools or array of perfumes and aftershave. A simple solution is to invest in a vanity unit. Vanities come in wall mounted and floor models, depending on what you prefer and can fit into your bathroom space.

Basins for smaller sized bathrooms

Basins come in a variety of styles – vanity, pedestal, vessel and counter basins. Whether you want a cool modern one or a classic rectangular basin, you will be able to find one to suit the available space in your small bathroom.

Countertop wash basins

If you don’t have a need for storage or there’s a severe space shortage, a countertop wash basin may be an option. Long, slim countertops provide space for bathroom essentials such as soap and your toothbrush, and the wash basin provides functionality. While a circular look may not be possible with your compact bathroom, rectangular and oval sinks look amazing but are effective space savers.

Compact wall mounted basins

If you have room for a sink and no more, then there are a range of wall mounted basins that provide functionality. With half-circle traditional basins or a modern rectangle, there are options to suit your bathroom style. If your bathroom is seriously small, then a sink that is wall mounted and slightly recessed provides the best option for maximum space saving.

A small bathroom doesn’t mean small style

There are many options for bathroom furniture storage, vanities and sinks for even the tiniest of bathrooms. Create an illusion of extra space by having units wall mounted, so that the floor is visible. Consider glass fittings when possible, so there are no or fewer solid barriers in the space.

And remember to use wall and floor colours with care. Dark colours and patterns make spaces appear smaller. With careful design, you can make your small bathroom a big feature.

Modern wall hung vanities

Wall hung vanities create an illusion of space as the floor is visible under the unit. They generally come with some level of inbuilt storage, and can have shelves that are open or closed, or drawers. One option for those who are particularly constrained for space is to look for a unit with sliding doors rather than ones that open outwards. You can choose slim units that are only 350mm deep, providing storage and still floor space. A wall mounted bathroom cabinet with a mirror on the door is a good option for a small bathroom. They can be hung above the wash basin, minimising use of floor space while providing storage space and a mirror. Vertical and horizontal style units are available and in any number of elegant and sleek styles and finishes. Consider a tall, slim tower cabinet, which may only be 350mm wide but provides a lot of storage space.

Freestanding vanities in a tight squeeze

If your bathroom does have a space where you can fit a floor unit, then there are small freestanding vanities to choose from. These help to give an expanded sense of space as they tend to look like a movable item of furniture. These offer more storage space than what a wall-mounted bathroom cabinet offers, which is great for towels and storage of additional toiletries or cleaning supplies.

Measure the space you have available and then based on the floor measurements, you can find an elegant unit that fits in that space. Make sure you consider how much space the doors/drawers need to be properly opened out.
