Asphalt shingles were once deemed as niche, however, they’ve become a popular option for those seeking a roofing system that looks great and performs well.
CertainTeed Asphalt Shingles, exclusively distributed in New Zealand by Viking Roofspec, comprise a strong fibreglass mat base on top of which ceramic chip-coated sheets of asphalt provide the high-performance layer.
“Basically, they are fibreglass mats coated with chip-embedded asphalt. That chip provides the waterproofing and UV protection,” says Zane Carpenter, Viking Roofspec’s Pitched Roofing and Technical Specialist.
Lightweight: The composition of CertainTeed Asphalt Shingles offers a strong, lightweight roofing product. A CertainTeed roof is less than half the weight of a concrete tiled roof, negating the extra structural requirements that would place unnecessary stress on the building.
“Within the Building Code, CertainTeed Asphalt Shingles don’t require any additional engineering specifications under NZS 3604. We also provide a shingle-specific timber sarking substrate which makes up the complete system. Timber sarking provides the additional bracing strength,” says Zane.
Durable: A Viking CertainTeed Asphalt Shingle roof assembly forgives seismic activity due to the above-mentioned bracing. It provides resistance against salt, mildew and high impact, and is warranted for wind resistance of up to 205 km/h. CertainTeed shingles have been subjected to decades of weathering in some of the world’s toughest environments.
Sustainability: CertainTeed shingles are manufactured with slag residue from the oil refining process, converting waste into a robust construction material, and reducing landfill refuse and greenhouse gas emissions. Lighter colours in the range reduce the energy required to cool a building and at the end of their serviceable life, these shingles can be overlaid, avoiding the dumping of inorganic materials.
Warranty: Viking CertainTeed shingles offer robust product warranties from 30 to 50 years.
To ensure your roof performs to the highest standard, Viking's CertainTeed shingles can only be installed by members of a nationwide network of Viking-approved applicators selected and trained to install your roof.
“Only approved applicators of Viking Roofspec can install our products. We do this to ensure a high installation standard. Materials are only as effective as the quality of their installation. We also do this so that when you specify a CertainTeed roof, there will always be a record of that purchase – so that in the unlikely event of an issue, our warranty documentation will verify the original purchase and installation date. These things provide peace of mind for the building owner.”
A variety of profiles and colours are available to choose from in the CertainTeed Asphalt Shingles range.
The ‘Landmark’ profile provides a classic, sophisticated style and is available in six colours. The ‘Presidential Shake’ is a luxury shingle created to deliver the charm and character of hand-split wood shakes with superior durability and strength to traditional wood shakes, while the ‘Highland Slate’ profile features bevelled tabs that are individually coloured to bring rich contrast and a contemporary look to buildings.
“There’s a lot of design flexibility because of the colours and profiles available – you’re not limited to a certain colour or style. There’s so much to choose from. When it comes to design, it’s an exciting product to specify,” says Zane.
Customers can visit Viking Roofspec to collect samples, and samples can also be posted if needed.
“We have eight technical managers around the country who are happy to help designers with their projects.”
