Discover how Christchurch builder Hennessy Construction transforms homes with expert renovations, seamless extensions, and new builds across Canterbury.

While no two projects are the same for Hennessy Construction, the process remains the same for each: engaging with homeowners to understand their needs and budget. Depending on the extent of the project, engineers, architects and designers can be organised by the team, otherwise, the construction can be started straight away.

“For renovations, we don’t often need engineers or a design team, unless we’re dealing with structural changes. When we do, we bring in the right people at the right time,” says Stephen Hennessy, Director of Hennessy Construction.

The new kitchen in the Adams Rd project is sleek and modern with black cabinetry, fluted detailing, and timber accents.

Home renovations: restoring and reimagining

Renovating older homes in Christchurch comes with unique challenges, and Hennessy Construction’s recent renovation of a two-storey home, originally built in the 1940s-1950s, is a perfect example of what’s possible when working with renovation specialists who understand the complexities involved.

In need of a full kitchen replacement, bathroom upgrades, and structural reconfiguration, part of the renovation involved improving previous works that had been completed over the years.

“It was an old community house and had been changed three or four times before I got involved, including small add-ons and renovations. As soon as we stripped the walls, we found issues,” says Stephen.

The timber batten wall conceals the doorway to the walk-in wardrobe and ensuite.
The raw-edge timber vanity ties the new space to the rest of the home.

With solid concrete walls, access proved to be a challenge. “Sub-floors were changed, and there were a lot of logistical issues with trying to get services through. We needed to bring in engineers and redesign sections so we could get services through walls.”

The home also contained unexpected levels of asbestos – one of many common hurdles when working on house renovation in New Zealand.

A full transformation completed in three-and-a-half months, the home is now fresh and modern, with its character preserved. Downstairs, the outdated kitchen was completely gutted and replaced with a contemporary, functional design. A new fireplace was also installed and has become a central gathering point. Upstairs, the main bathroom and ensuite were fully redesigned, and the master bedroom reconfigured to include a new walk-in wardrobe.

Hennessy Construction worked hard to transform this older home into a comfortable retreat for its owners.

House extensions and smaller renovation projects

Not all projects need a complete overhaul, but it’s important to work with professionals who can tackle the technical aspects.

A challenge involved in Hennessy Construction’s Elizabeth Street extension involved integrating the new structure into the existing flat roofline, which featured a small parapet and internal gutter system. “Our team carefully adapted the roof design to ensure a seamless connection and long-term weather performance,” says Stephen.

The modern extension to the single-storey home provided the owners with a spacious master bedroom and ensuite, with a custom walk-in wardrobe.

“The clients were still living in the house during the work, and it all went really well. This was a shorter project, around two months.”

What to know before starting your project

Whether it’s a new home build or a renovation project, having a solid plan is key – know your budget, be clear on what you want, and learn everything you can about your property.

“Especially for renovations, it’s good to know your house. Get a set of plans, see where your services are, and learn the history of the house. It all goes a long way,” says Stephen, with support available for clients if they need it. “We’re happy to do that.”

Hennessy Construction approaches every project, small and large, with care and attention to detail.

“Every home we work on is different, and we love the challenge that comes with that.”
