1. Understand the layout of your bathroom

Understanding the dimensions and layout of your bathroom is important because the size and shape of your space will determine the type of vanity light fixture you can install. For instance, if you have a large bathroom with high ceilings, then you’ll likely be able to hang several different fixtures, like pendant lights, to create an interesting focal point. However, if your bathroom is small and there are limited wall or ceiling spaces available, then you may need to opt for a single light fixture or two that can provide adequate illumination without taking up too much space. An LED mirror is another excellent space-saving option with respect to this.

2. Select an appropriate size for your vanity lighting fixtures

When choosing vanity lights, size is an important factor to consider. The length of the light should be relative to the width of your bathroom vanity. A good rule of thumb is that the light should cover at least half the width of your vanity but not more than two-thirds. If you’re hanging several fixtures, they should all be a similar size to create a balanced and aesthetically pleasing look. However, these rules are somewhat flexible depending on the interior style and look you're going for.

3. The colour temperature of your vanity light fixtures is key

The colour temperature of your lighting is always something to be aware of for any space you are designing. Generally speaking, warmer tones (between 2700K and 3000K) are best for bathroom vanity lighting because they are more flattering and create a cosy atmosphere. Warmer tones also help reduce harsh shadows which can be particularly helpful if you’re applying makeup or shaving. If you’re looking for a more modern look, cooler tones (between 4000K and 4500K) can also be used but they may not be as flattering in the bathroom environment. Things like frosted bulbs can help soften this somewhat.

4. Make sure that the vanity lights you choose are in keeping with the existing decor

When choosing new vanity light fixtures, be sure to take into account the overall aesthetic of your space. For instance, if you have a traditional-style bathroom, then selecting contemporary pendant lights may not be the best choice. Alternatively, opting for antique brass bathroom sconces could create another clash if you have a modern bathroom. Instead, make sure that the bathroom vanity lights you choose are in keeping with the existing decor so that they blend seamlessly and create a cohesive look.

5. Don't forget to think about your bathroom mirror

The placement of your bathroom mirror is a major factor to consider when selecting lights for your bathroom vanity. Generally speaking, the best lighting for a bathroom mirror is recessed lighting or wall mounted sconces, especially if you have a large vanity mirror as they won’t block the reflection. For smaller mirrors, ceiling mounted lights may be more suitable as they will provide ample illumination without taking up too much space.

6. Position your vanity lights with purpose in mind

The role of bathroom vanity lighting is to firstly be functional, so it’s important to think about the purpose of each light you choose very carefully. For instance, you may want one light positioned above the sink for task lighting or two lights on either side of a vanity mirror for makeup application. You may also want a hanging ceiling light for ambience. Whatever your needs are, be sure to position your vanity lights with purpose in mind so that they provide adequate illumination and create the desired effect.

7. Multiple vanity lighting fixtures make for unique arrangements

Installing multiple vanity lighting fixtures is always an option, especially if you have a large bathroom or high ceilings. Having two or more fixtures can allow you to create interesting lighting dynamics to achieve a look that’s truly unique. The other option is multi-bulb fixtures like a chandelier which will give you more light with a similar layering effect which can be just as impactful. Just remember to consider the size, shape and style of these fixtures in the context of the overall space as they will be quite prominent in the bathroom.

8. Consider different types of lights for bathroom vanities

There are many different types of lights that can be used for bathroom vanity lighting and it's good to be open to them all at the start of your journey. Wall sconces, for instance, can add a touch of elegance and sophistication while adjustable recessed lights provide a more modern look. Other options include pendant lighting, spotlights and track lights which are ideal if you want the flexibility of lighting different areas at once. No matter which type of lighting you choose, make sure that it provides ample illumination and fits in with the existing decor.

9. Bathroom vanity lights with dimmers can be advantageous

If you’re looking for a more versatile lighting solution, then installing lights with dimmers can be beneficial. Dimmers allow you to customise the brightness of your vanity lighting to create an ambience that’s perfect for the time of day or task at hand. It’s also worth noting that dimmer switches allow you to operate in an energy-efficient way, making them an excellent choice for sustainability and for your wallet.

10. Above all, safety should be a top priority

When selecting any bathroom vanity light, safety should always be prioritised. Be sure to choose fixtures and bulbs with the appropriate wattage rating for your space and avoid any wiring or installation work beyond your skill level. If in doubt, consult an experienced electrician to ensure that your lighting is installed correctly and meets all necessary safety standards in New Zealand.
