Inside the new age of surveying: How technology is rewriting the architecture & design workflow

For decades, surveying has been the foundation of so many successful projects while remaining largely invisible in the day-to-day workflow of architects, designers and builders. A survey would be commissioned, a site visit completed, and then (often weeks later) plans would arrive via email, disconnected from the evolving design process and the realities on site.

That model is now being actively dismantled. At C&A Surveyors, technology is no longer a back-of-house support function; it’s central to how projects are communicated, coordinated and delivered. At the centre of this shift is C&A Connect: a purpose-built digital dashboard designed to integrate surveying into the live, collaborative workflows of modern practice.

“Surveying used to be something that happened in isolation,” says Joe Kazzi, Full Stack Developer at C&A Surveyors. “Surveyors would carry out the work, send a PDF, and that was it. But that doesn’t reflect how projects actually run anymore. Everyone’s working in real time, and the survey needs to live in that same ecosystem.”

C&A’s 3D surveys use precise data points, capturing contours, structures and services with context, supporting clearer decision-making and faster approvals.

Surveying, modernised

The pressure on project teams to move faster, coordinate more closely and reduce risk has exposed the limitations of traditional, email-based surveying processes. Chasing updates, unclear timelines and version confusion all introduce friction at a stage where accuracy and clarity matter most.

C&A Connect was developed as a direct response to those pain points. Rather than treating surveying as a static deliverable, the platform reframes it as a live service: visible, trackable and fully integrated with design and construction workflows.

“From day one, the goal was transparency,” Joe explains. “We wanted clients to be able to see exactly what was happening with their job without having to pick up the phone or send another follow-up email.”

For architects and designers juggling multiple projects, C&A Connect functions as a central dashboard. All active jobs are visible in one place, with clear status updates, real-time alerts and instant access to deliverables.

One of the platform’s key features is live surveyor tracking. Clients can see when their surveyor is en route, view their location on a live map and get accurate ETAs, a feature that has proven invaluable for site coordination.

“Knowing when someone will actually arrive sounds simple, but on site it makes a huge difference,” says Joe. “Builders can plan their day, homeowners don’t need to wait around, and designers know exactly when fresh data is coming.”

Once surveys are complete, all outputs are available immediately through the platform. DWGs, PDFs, 3D PDFs and viewer links can be downloaded directly, eliminating delays and reducing administrative back-and-forth.

C&A Connect allows you to manage multiple projects at once, and track when your surveyor is on their way.

Designed for design and build workflows

Critically, the system has been developed with downstream users in mind. Survey data is only useful if it can be seamlessly absorbed into the tools designers already use.

“There’s a lot of anxiety around new formats or software compatibility,” Joe notes. “So we made sure everything we deliver fits straight into existing workflows, including CAD, Revit, Archicad and IFC. There’s no learning curve.”

C&A’s 3D surveys are a natural extension of this philosophy. Using millions of precise data points, they capture contours, structures and services with context, giving project teams a complete picture of the site. This complex dataset supports clearer decision-making and faster approvals.

“Our 3D surveys remove assumptions.” Joe says. “When everyone can see the same site information, you get better coordination and fewer surprises later.”

The cumulative impact of these systems is measurable in hours saved. Fewer calls to check progress. Fewer emails chasing plans. Fewer misunderstandings about versions or site conditions.

Being able to see the same site information for a single project allows better and faster decision making.

Future-ready surveying

C&A’s investment in technology is matched by a broader commitment to accessibility and speed. With site attendance available within 72 hours for key services (including contour, detail & boundary identification, 3D, UAV and internal surveys) the practice supports the pace at which modern projects move.

They’re also backing emerging designers through a unique initiative*: new architects and designers can access a comprehensive surveying package valued at approximately $4,200 for $200, with the full amount donated to the Sydney Children’s Hospital Foundation.

“It’s about lowering the barrier to doing things properly from the start,” says Joe. “Good data early makes everyone’s job easier.”
