6 tapware trends: what’s new and what’s here to stay

Popular trends naturally impact the design industry, from finishes and shapes to functional innovations. Discover what's new and what's here to stay as ArchiPro takes a closer look at the top six trends in kitchen and bathroom tapware:

1. Brushed finishes in tapware are here to stay

Brushed finishes have become a staple in modern tapware design, offering a sophisticated alternative to the traditional polished chrome. “Current trends are leaning towards brushed finishes like stainless and brass. These finishes are becoming more popular compared to the traditional polished chrome once favoured. The brushed finishes are definitely here to stay,” says Andrew Honore, Marketing Coordinator at Voda Plumbingware.

Brushed stainless and brushed brass provide a sleek, understated elegance that complements various interior styles, while brushed copper caters to those seeking bolder, more distinctive designs.

2. New designs embrace minimalism

Minimalist designs continue to dominate the tapware market, with consumers and specifiers favouring simple, clean lines over elaborate forms. “In terms of design, we've noticed a shift towards more minimalistic and cylindrical shapes,” says Honore. “These designs offer a sleek, modern look and are preferred over the bulkier, square designs that were popular a decade ago.”

Honore adds this minimalist approach is evident in the popularity of pin levers and gooseneck sink mixers, which combine functionality with aesthetic appeal.

3. Single lever continues to dominate

The convenience and ease of installation of single lever taps make them a popular choice for modern homes. “Single levers are generally more sought-after or more common. Whether from a plumbing perspective or ease of use, they are often preferred over having two handles or levers controlling hot and cold water separately,” explains Honore.

This trend is further supported by evolving plumbing technologies, allowing for a blend of traditional looks with modern functionalities.

4. Traditional styles with a modern twist

Modern tapware trends are bridging the gap between traditional and contemporary styles. “People can still get a traditional look with modern colours without having separate taps, and it still fits in the heritage style look,” says Honore.

This versatility means homeowners can enjoy the aesthetic of classic designs while benefiting from the convenience of modern single-lever systems and contemporary colour finishes.

Voda Plumbingware's Storm range ticks all the boxes.

5. Uniformity is still key

According to Honore, uniformity in tapware across different areas of the house is here to stay. “Uniformity in design is crucial for many homeowners. Often, they'll choose a single colour theme, like matte black, throughout their house for a cohesive look.

“However, at Voda Plumbingware, complementary colours are also a popular choice for those looking to add variety.” Matte black and brushed nickel are popular choices for creating a seamless look, while complementary colours add a touch of personalisation without clashing.

While Honore says the demand for two-tone finishes has decreased, he sees a potential trend in having different colours for levers and spouts. However, the major demand still remains for single-tone finishes.

6. Sustainable innovations in durability

Technological advancements are enhancing the durability and functionality of tapware. One such innovation is the PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) finish. “The new PVD brushed black finish is a notable addition to our product line, known for its durability and resistance to scratches and fingerprints, which are common issues with traditional matte black finishes,” says Honore. This ensures that tapware not only looks good but also stands up to the rigours of daily use.

Moreover, new features like the dual-function pull-out handpiece in Voda Plumbingware’s Apollo collection offer more functionality in the kitchen. “The biggest difference with our new Apollo pull-out sink mixer is its dual-function pull-out handpiece, and the tap is made with lead-free DZR brass. This meets the new upcoming lead-free tapware regulations and ensures better health safety,” says Honore.

Energy efficiency is also a critical consideration in modern tapware design. Innovations like cold start technology help reduce unnecessary energy consumption. “Our cold start technology is designed to save energy by ensuring the mixer starts in a cold position,” explains Honore. “This prevents unnecessary heating, making it more energy-efficient and allowing for closer placement to the wall.”

Energy efficiency is important in tapware design.

Minimalist tapware designs are here to stay.

The bathroom and kitchen tapware trends reflect a blend of aesthetic sophistication, technological innovation and practical functionality. Whether it's the enduring appeal of brushed finishes, the minimalist designs, the preference for single levers, or the move towards energy efficiency, these trends are shaping the future of tapware in exciting ways. By embracing these trends, homeowners can create beautiful, functional spaces that are both modern and timeless.
