Few interior accents add instant charm and character quite like table lamps. Not only are they highly functional, but well-designed lamps enhance the overall aesthetic of your decor.
From the simple and streamlined to the ornate and fanciful, let your design creativity reign with your lamp selection.
Not sure if you're choosing the right ones and using them to their full potential? We share our ultimate guide to making the most out of decorative table lamps, one bulb at a time.
How to choose the right table lamp
Lamps come in all shapes and sizes, and can be made from a range of materials including ceramic, porcelain, wood and metals. High-end lamps are made by hand from top quality materials and can be the icing on the cake in a carefully considered interior.
The right table lamp can transform your living space. Whether you're eyeing a traditional lamp with a pull chain or a smart lamp that doubles as a USB charger, it pays to do your research before making a purchase.
Let's take a look at a few of the top factors to consider.
Get the height right
To make your table lamp look appropriate in the room it's in, remember what's known as the "eye-level" rule. In short, this means that when you're sitting down, the bottom of the lampshade should align with your eye level.
Otherwise, if the shade is too tall, light from the exposed bulb could shine directly into your eyes. If the shade is lower than eye level, the light will be focused below where it needs to go. If you plan to position your table lamp next to an armchair, sofa, or any other sitting area, this is the guideline to keep in mind.

Choose the Right Size
An oversized lamp that brightens up a family room can look out of place on a dainty bedside table. At the same time, a delicate table lamp is quickly dwarfed by an extra-wide desk.
To size it just right, remember that the height of your table lamp should be no more than 1.5 times the height of the furniture you've placed it upon. At the same time, the shade should always be narrower than the item's edges. If you're placing the lamp on an end table, its shade should ideally be half the width of the table itself.
Take the time to measure these dimensions carefully, rather than simply eyeballing them. Another reason why it's smart to size appropriately? It can extend the lifespan of your investment, and keep your family safe.
A grand table lamp might make an eye-catching statement on top of a thin, skinny table but it will be less than functional. It’s likely to be unbalanced and could pose a hazard.
Keep the overall activity level of the room in mind. If it's a room that sees a regular flow of movement, such as the living room, make sure all table lamps are stable, with bases that are heavy and wide enough to remain in place without tipping over.
