In contemporary architecture, some of the most powerful design gestures are subtle. From the quiet hum of ventilation to the subtle circulation of air for comfort, the systems behind air quality often operate in the background. But when innovation meets design, even the unseen becomes transformative and desirable.

This year, Australian ventilation specialist Expella has once again proven beauty and performance can coexist, with four of its products now winners of Australian Good Design Awards, including multiple Gold Accolades and a coveted Best in Class honour. These achievements celebrate the brand's aesthetic and technical excellence, but also recognise the health benefits, sustainability and intelligence behind these integrated designs.

“We know that the health of a dwelling is drastically improved by effective ventilation to control condensation, mould, indoor humidity and other pollutants, resulting in improved air quality,” said Wes Quick, Managing Director of Expella.

Coreduct redefines airflow efficiency

For decades, ducting has been hidden above ceilings and behind walls, rarely questioned or improved upon, until the innovative Expella team challenged this convention by developing Coreduct (Trademarked).

Recipient of two Gold 2025 Australian Good Design Awards for the Product Hardware and Building and Engineering categories, Coreduct is a low-profile, flat-pack rigid duct system designed for domestic and commercial ventilation. The product is addressing the inefficiencies of traditional HVAC installations and showing how thoughtful materials and logistics can support sustainability.

For example, Coreduct’s clever flat-pack design reduces transport and storage bulk, while local manufacturing, and using recyclable polypropylene instead of PVC, minimises the environmental impact. The result is a lighter, cleaner, and more sustainable solution addressing common environmental and logistical inefficiencies in the building industry.

The Good Design Awards Jury described the Coreduct system as a “simple but elegant solution addressing a genuine need with demonstrated positive impact,” adding, “the size reduction and efficiency gains in this product are remarkable. If it can scale as a mainstream solution, it has strong potential to shift the industry.”

Milu Odourless Toilet is the new standard of luxury for bathrooms

Few experiences define comfort and wellbeing like the quality of the air we breathe, even in the most private of spaces. The Milu Odourless Toilet, awarded the 2020 Good Design Award Best in Class in the Product Design Hardware and Building category, addresses one of the oldest challenges in bathroom and toilet design: odour control.

Featuring Expella’s patented Odour Control Device, the Odourless by Expella system extracts odours directly from the toilet bowl, venting them discreetly into the sewer, long before they can escape into the room. The result is a bathroom that always feels (and smells) fresh.

The Good Design Awards Jury called it “a clever blend of design and technology innovation brought together to resolve an age-old problem,” adding, “it has the potential for significant commercial impact, particularly in fit-outs that use in-wall cisterns.” Quiet, efficient, and elegantly integrated, the Milu Odourless Toilet reflects how thoughtful engineering can directly enhance the quality of our indoor environments.

The award-winning Odourless by Expella system is now available in a select range of Caroma in-wall and back-to-wall toilet suites.

Shadowline Diffuser Pro, the answer to architecturally designed ventilation

For those engrossed in modern and minimalist architecture, Expella’s Shadowline Diffuser Pro is a bathroom must-have. Recipient of a 2022 Good Design Award Gold Accolade in the Product Design category, it achieves what others have not: a ventilation system that disappears yet, conversely, a feature in its own right.

Designed to sit seamlessly within the ceiling and wall junctions, the diffuser provides optimal airflow without visual intrusion, achieving what the judges called, “a great innovation that achieves the design intent of being nearly invisible after installation, without compromising on ventilation.”

Wes notes, “The Shadowline Diffuser Pro ensures that you can still achieve the best possible design outcomes, without compromising on ventilation performance or appearance.”

This impressive merger of minimalism and performance is ideal for designers and homeowners who value architectural lines and those finer details within every room.

Humidity Sensor Switch: smart, subtle and sustainable

Sometimes great design comes in the smallest packages, such as Expella’s Ceiling Mounted Humidity Sensor Switch, winning a 2020 Good Design Award Gold Accolade in the Product Design Hardware and Building category (from a record 835 entries).

Developed to detect high humidity within confined spaces (like bathrooms or laundries), the sensor automatically activates the exhaust fan when needed, and switches it off, when the air clears. Why? Think reduced energy use, lower running costs, and improved indoor air quality without any user intervention – now that’s impressive design.

Clearly, the Good Design Award’s judges agreed, who praised the Humidity Sensor, “Clean looking and nicely detailed - an elegant balance of form and function. Smart application of automation with a simple yet fit-for-purpose design that eliminates unnecessary exhaust fan running costs. All homes should have these installed in wet areas.”

The Humidity Sensor Switch is coming soon to the Expella website.

Expella’s commitment to local manufacturing, recyclable materials and energy efficiency reflects the brand’s responsible design philosophy. From smart automation to designer airflow, Expella’s award-winning innovations help create healthier, more sustainable living spaces while working with, rather than against, the interior design.
