From poolside elegance to old-world opulence, these impactful outdoor rooms allow you to enjoy the beauty of nature from the comfort of your own home.

The key to a beautiful outdoor space is viewing it as an extension of the indoors. While awareness of the physical and mental benefits of nature has seen architects and interior designers working to bring the outdoors inside, the past few years have seen an increased desire to soak up the great outdoors. While the natural beauty of the outdoor landscape is difficult to compete with, the best outdoor rooms work to bring the style and comfort of the indoors into your external spaces. Increased innovation has resulted in outdoor furniture that’s as chic as its indoor counterparts while being able to withstand the elements.

Whether it’s an elegant poolside retreat, a European-style entertaining space amongst the greenery, or savvy use of precious balcony space in an apartment, these are our favourite outdoor rooms.

The principles of coastal design are employed with a contemporary twist in this outdoor room by Bijl Architecture. Indoor-outdoor living is promoted by glass doors that connect the airy open-plan kitchen and living room to the shaded outdoor area. Neutral hues are used in both spaces, providing an aesthetic link between the two, with colourful striped textiles covering the outdoor furniture adding a pop of personality.

Sheltered outdoor spaces in this Hamilton Island home create tranquility, with the hard edges and almost brutalist tone of the construction juxtaposed against the greenery. A reflection pond acts as a thoughtful pause amongst the pale timber construction in the atrium while in the pool area, deep purple and red furniture imbue the concrete construction with a sense of richness.
