A custom cedar door by Gliderol creates visual continuity with the architecture.
A garage door can account for more than half of a home's street-facing façade, yet despite its scale, it has traditionally been one of the last design decisions to be made.
Yet innovations in garage door design mean this is changing, as architects begin to view the garage door less as a functional necessity and more as an architectural opportunity.
It can be designed to disappear into the façade, allowing the architecture to take centre stage, or it can become the feature that gives the home its identity before you've even stepped inside.
"The garage door is often what welcomes homeowners and visitors to a dwelling," says Tom Ainscough from Gliderol. "It adds value, street appeal and style to every home."
Unlike a front door or a window, on many contemporary homes the garage door is the façade. Every decision, from the material through to the detailing, contributes to the overall look of the home.
That shift in thinking has opened the door to a far more bespoke approach.
"With custom garage doors we can almost do anything you want," shares Liz Riley from Gliderol. "Common material choices include real timber, timber-look aluminium, glass, aluminium composite panels and acrylic.”
To promote visual continuity, it’s popular to use a cohesive material palette. For example, a timber garage door that shares a similar visual language to the home’s cladding, or a composite material that continues the rhythm of vertical cladding.
Of course, not every garage door is designed to be seen. One of the strongest trends in contemporary architecture is making the garage almost disappear altogether. Flush detailing and matching cladding allow the door to blend into the surrounding façade, creating long, uninterrupted planes that emphasise the home's form rather than its apertures.
This custom garage door with aluminium composite panels ties in seamlessly with the home's material palette.
Because Gliderol's custom doors are designed around each project, architects and homeowners aren't limited to a standard collection of finishes. Timber, timber-look aluminium, aluminium composite panels, acrylic, glass and even copper can all become part of the design conversation.
"The whole point of custom doors is exactly what it means: Custom," says Tom. "Nothing is off the table."
That philosophy has led to some genuinely unique outcomes. One homeowner wanted a copper-clad garage door with windows incorporated into the upper panels. Another loved the warmth of timber but needed the durability of aluminium, resulting in a bespoke herringbone-patterned aluminium door. Other projects by Gliderol have incorporated one-way glazing, tinted glass and combinations of materials developed specifically for a single home.
Interestingly, these projects rarely begin with a fully resolved solution. More often, an architect arrives with a concept, a homeowner has collected inspiration images or a builder wants to know whether something is possible.
"We've seen almost everything," Tom says. "Architects explain what they're trying to achieve and that starts the process. We share ideas and continue striving for the optimum result."

That collaborative process is one reason Gliderol encourages conversations as early as possible. Garage doors might be installed towards the end of a build, but many of the important decisions happen long before then. Early involvement gives designers greater freedom to integrate materials, refine detailing and ensure the garage door contributes to the overall architectural vision.
While aesthetics often drive the initial conversation, practical considerations are never far behind. The orientation of the garage, exposure to sunlight, structural requirements and how the space will actually be used all influence the final specification. For some homeowners, introducing natural light through glazed sections is a priority. Others are focused on insulation, thermal performance or selecting low-maintenance materials that will continue to perform for decades.
Current residential trends reflect this balance between beauty and practicality. Vertical castellated cladding continues to shape many contemporary façades, while natural timber, particularly Western Red Cedar, remains a favourite for adding warmth and texture. At the same time, timber-look aluminium and insulated sectional doors are becoming increasingly popular with homeowners looking for lower maintenance and improved energy performance.
What unites all of these projects is the understanding that a garage door should never feel disconnected from the architecture around it.
As Tom puts it: "Every door is a piece of art."
Whether the goal is to create a striking architectural statement or a façade where the garage almost disappears, a custom garage door offers an opportunity to think beyond function. When considered from the earliest stages of design, it becomes another architectural element working quietly in harmony with the whole.
