Sitting by a warm, crackling fire is an experience that can’t be replicated. But the type of fireplace can change that experience. It’s why Castworks carefully selects options from some of Europe’s most respected fireplace manufacturers to bring a unique offering to Australian homes.

Every product plays a role in creating a space, and the experience enjoyed by those who inhabit those spaces. When it comes to fireplaces, this is something Castworks understands well.

Rather than chasing trends, Castworks has deliberately built its portfolio over 30 years. Led by CJ Mackay, the brand’s repertoire has grown to include international brands such as the award-winning cast iron Morsø indoor and outdoor ranges, ADF fires with their unique flue damper system, contemporary Austroflamm fires, award-winning Hergóm heaters and wood stoves, and the latest electric fireplaces from Evonic.

“We’re always looking for products that have a distinct offering in our market,” says CJ. “Whether that’s through design, style or quality, we’re focused on bringing brands with strong reputations in Europe and products that we believe will offer something unique to Australia.”

Many of the brands represented have been discovered through international visits and long-standing relationships, allowing Castworks to introduce architects and designers to products rarely seen elsewhere locally.

For design-led architectural homes

Whether incorporated into a new build or renovation, Castworks’ fireplaces often find themselves being centrepieces.

“Many of our fireplaces are specified as feature pieces. Something homeowners gather around on weekends and when entertaining, rather than simply as a source of heat,” explains CJ. “They’re not an impulse purchase. They’re specified because they suit the architecture, the interior design and the way the homeowner wants to live.”

For this reason, it’s encouraged that architects engage the expertise of the Castworks team early in the design phase.

“There can be misunderstandings around clearances, flue systems and combustible materials. The earlier we’re involved, the easier it is to ensure everything is designed correctly from the beginning.”

The beauty of cast iron fireplaces

Cast iron fireplaces have become a feature in Castworks’ collection, a material not as common for fireplaces in Australia as it is abroad.

“One of the advantages of cast iron is that you can shape it more easily,” says CJ. “When you look at Scandinavian or Danish-inspired designs, you’ll often see softer curves and more sculptural forms that simply aren’t achievable with other materials.”

This flexibility allows brands such as Hergóm and Morso to create these distinctive architectural pieces that function as both heating appliances and design features.

Cast iron also brings practical benefits. Notably, its radiant heat qualities allow fireplaces to operate effectively without fans, creating a quieter and more authentic heating experience.

The material also has benefits when used for outdoor fireplaces. “Cast iron is one of the best cooking materials available. It absorbs and retains heat exceptionally well.”
