A builder’s own home on Waiheke Island showcases a sophisticated and contemporary design that welcomes the outdoors in.
“We ended up needing to include a basement, and decided that if we were doing that, we would commit to building a proper home here,” says Van Hout.
The exterior materiality complements the natural surrounds.
Floating oak stairs run from the basement to the master suite on the top floor.
The island bench features an integrated sink and plenty of space for the family to gather around.
The kitchen's sleek, monotone scheme adds to the seamless aesthetic of the space.
The living area centres around the elegant fireplace, sophistically surrounded by matte-black Fenix and oak paneling.
Pōhutukawa frame the view from the northeasterly deck.
The outdoor kitchen can be used year-round.
“Colour has been added with furnishing, but it’s still neutral so that nothing stands out,” says Van Hout.
Handmade terracotta floor tiles bring warms and texture to the master ensuite.
Large sliding windows welcome in the ocean breeze and furniture and textiles have been carefully selected to complement the cedar sarking and surrounding environment.
